CEC Gyanesh Kumar row highlights: Congress leaders Rahul, Priyanka Gandhi were detained on Wednesday after Delhi Police halted three buses carrying INDIA bloc leaders to Jantar Mantar for a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The buses were stopped on Ashoka Road, following which Rahul, Priyanka and other leaders stepped down....Read More
Rahul Gandhi was picked up and pushed inside a van. Protestors were seen sititng on top of the vehicle.
Priyanka Gandhi, along with a few women protesters, lay down on the street holding copies of the Constitution. Women police personnel were later seen removing her from the spot.
They were taken to different police stations and Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi were released a little after 8 PM from police detention. While Rahul Gandhi was taken to the Barakhamba road police station, Priyanka Gandhi and others were detained in the Chhatrasal stadium.
This comes after Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge hosted a lunch for Opposition camp at Sagar Ratna in Janpath. The leaders decided they will go to Jantar Mantar to stage a protest.
Delhi Police have registered an FIR after receiving a complaint alleging that Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with other MPs and people accompanying them, entered the Akashvani Bhavan premises during Tuesday’s Opposition protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The entire Opposition has come together to demand the resignation of the CEC. Several INDIA bloc MPs protested on Tuesday to demand the CEC's ouster and marched towards the Election Commission of India in Delhi. Many of them, including Congress MPs Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, KC Venugopal and Pawan Khera, were briefly detained at Delhi's Akashvani Bhavan after they staged a sit-in.
The protest by the Opposition leaders comes after alleged irregularities in decisions taken by the poll body, particularly the Special Intensive Revision exercise, an issue which has been a major point of contention ever since last year's Bihar assembly polls, when the current nationwide SIR exercise was commenced.
Apart from the Opposition MPs, other student organisations and activists have also taken out marches demanding the CEC's resignation.
ECI says 'no party sought meeting till 4 pm'
The Election Commission of India on Tuesday said that no political party had formally sought an appointment with the poll panel before 4 pm, as the Opposition MPs protested in the national capital.
The ECI said it was informed by Delhi Police at around 4 pm that a delegation of MPs led by Gandhi wanted to meet the Commission and submit a memorandum.
Jantar Mantar 2.0
Political pressure group Cockroach Janta Party's founder Abhijeet Dipke announced that they will launch a fresh agitation at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on October 10 against the CEC.
CJP's co-convener Saurav submitted a notice at the Parliament Street police station in Delhi on Wednesday to “intimate” the Police of their protest on October 10, 2026. He said that they are expecting “large crowd” and have informed the police accordingly.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, October 6, Dipke said, "One Nation, One Election is just a slogan. The actual intention of the ruling dispensation is to push the country toward 'one nation, one political party'."
He also alleged that Maharashtra police was issuing notices to CJP protesters, pressuring them not to attend the Delhi protest.
"It is heart-breaking that the Chandrapur police served notices to CJP workers, asking them not to participate in the protest at Jantar Mantar. They also asked CJP workers about the source of funds for travelling to Jantar Mantar. The police stated (in the notice) that the agitation is going to be "violent". How do the police know so early that the agitation would be violent? Have they planned anything in advance?'' he asked.
"Why is the Maharashtra Police behaving like Delhi Police? What do they have to do if a person is going to Delhi from Chandrapur?" he added.

When Mr. @RahulGandhi thundered “Bihar elections are stolen” Will he at least say something about this TN conundrum?” said DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai on X.
“Most notably, among the 135 constituencies where more than 20,000 voters were deleted, TVK won 84. In the ten constituencies with more than 80,000 deletions, TVK won all ten,” he added.
CEC Gyanesh Kumar row LIVE: No law obliges Election Commission to meet MPs - The rules and practice behind INDIA bloc standoff
CEC Gyanesh Kumar row LIVE: No provision in the Constitution or the Representation of the People Acts of 1950 and 1951 obliges the commission to give a party, a delegation or a group of MPs an audience. Article 324 of the Constitution vests the "superintendence, direction and control" of elections in the commission, and leaves it to decide how, where and from whom it receives representations.
The commission routinely receives delegations from recognised national and state parties, accepts memoranda on electoral rolls, the Model Code of Conduct and electronic voting machines, and gives parties appointments when they ask for them.
A poll body is expected to be even-handed between parties, and hearing their complaints is part of that, so turning away a large Opposition delegation outright may be unusual.
