Full emergency briefly declared at Chennai airport after left engine issue on IndiGo flight

The aircraft, carrying 224 people on board, later landed safely on Runway 25 at Chennai airport. The full emergency was later lifted.

A full emergency was declared at Chennai airport for IndiGo flight 6E-723 travelling from Kolkata to Chennai after the aircraft reported a left engine inoperative condition, the Chennai airport authority said on Wednesday.

Emergency response measures were activated after the declaration to ensure the aircraft could land safely, they added. The full emergency was later lifted.

Full emergency at Chennai airport

The full emergency was declared at 11:29pm, with the aircraft expected to reach the airport at 11:37pm, against its scheduled arrival time of 11:30pm.

The aircraft, carrying 224 people on board, landed safely on Runway 25 at 11:37pm.

"A Full Emergency was declared at 2329 IST for flight 6E-723, operating from Kolkata (CCU) to Chennai (MAA), due to a left engine inoperative condition. The aircraft was expected to arrive at 2337 HRS, with the scheduled time of arrival being 2330 HRS," the Chennai airport authority said, as per news agency ANI.

The emergency was officially withdrawn at 11:47pm, after which airport operations continued normally, it added.

"Following the declaration of the Full Emergency, the necessary emergency response arrangements were initiated to facilitate the safe arrival of the aircraft. The aircraft subsequently landed safely at 2337 IST on Runway 25, with 224 persons on board. Full Emergency was formally withdrawn at 2347 HRS. All operations normal," the statement read.

Last month, an international IndiGo flight travelling from Dubai to Mumbai had to make an unscheduled emergency landing at Gujarat's Rajkot Airport after the pilots received an alert about smoke in the aircraft's lower cargo hold, airport authorities said.

The crew declared an emergency and sought priority landing clearance from Air Traffic Control (ATC) at Rajkot. Fire tenders and medical teams were deployed near the runway as a precaution.

IndiGo flight’s emergency landing in Delhi

In March this year, a full emergency was declared for an IndiGo flight approaching Delhi after the aircraft reported an engine failure shortly before landing, officials aware of the matter said.

All passengers and crew members landed safely despite the technical problem, they said. The incident took place at 10.39am.

Officials identified the flight as IndiGo 6E 579, operating from Visakhapatnam to New Delhi, with 161 people on board.

The aircraft landed safely at Indira Gandhi International Airport at 10.54am. The Boeing 737-800 was given priority to land on Runway 28 after the alert was received during the flight, officials said.
