Jamia fires assistant professor after his arrest for alleged rape of a lecturer
The university reiterated its "zero-tolerance policy" towards any form of violence against women.
The Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) recently fired an assistant professor after his arrest in connection with the alleged rape of a university lectura. The action came right after the victim filed a complaint about the assault at the New Friends Colony police station.

The accused, who was employed as a contractual assistant professor with the Department of Political Science, has been accused of engaging in physical relations with the complainant under the false promise of marriage, PTI reported.

In a statement, the university said, "Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has terminated an assistant professor (contractual) from the Department of Political Science after receiving information about his arrest following a complaint against him by a female at the New Friends Colony Police Station."
"JMI is committed to safeguarding and advancing the dignity of women and takes all necessary steps to ensure a safe and secure work environment for all members of the university community," the statement added.
The university also reiterated its "zero-tolerance policy" towards any form of violence against women.

Clarifying the nature of the accused's employment, the university said he was not a permanent faculty member and was employed on a temporary hiring basis.
The Delhi-based university also distanced itself from the incident, emphasising that the alleged assault occurred outside the campus and “is a personal matter.”
What are the charges against the Jamia professor?
According to the Delhi Police, the accused and the complainant initially connected via social media and reportedly formed a relationship. The accused promised to marry the woman and engaged in physical relations following that.

Their families were reportedly involved in marriage discussions, but on October 4, 2024, the accused's father allegedly refused the proposal, citing an "unmatched horoscope."
Subsequently, the accused also refused to go through with the marriage, they said.
The police statement confirmed that an FIR was filed and the accused apprehended.
