Udaipur Tension: Gehlot, Tharoor urge social media to delete murder video; SIT to probe case

An Assistant Sub-Inspector Dhan Mandi , Bhanwar Lal has been suspended for negligence. According to reports, the police had prior information of the accused planning to commit such a crime. The accused had even posted a video prior to committing the crime threatening to take law in their own hands.

The NIA team, which has been sent to get more details in Udaipur incident, likely to take over the case even if the state police don't give consent. Officers at Centre feel it is a case of violent extremism and incident has caused fear among the public.

In instances where the Centre feels any murder has been committed not due to personal enmity but to create the terror in the mind of people and has religious extremism involved, it can hand over probe to the NIA without taking the consent of state government.

Keeping in view Udaipur incident, I appeal to the public not to pay heed to rumours and maintain communal harmony, says Bhilwara district collector Ashish Modi.

An SIT, comprising of SOG ADG Ashok Kumar Rathore, ATS IG Prafulla Kumar, one SP & Additional SP, has been constituted to investigate the matter.

A team of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has been sent to the crime scene in Udaipur after a man was beheaded by two men in broad daylight.

The arrested accused, namely Rafiq Mohammed and Abdul Jabbar, are both the residents of Surajpole, Udaipur, say police.

“Both the accused have been detained. The law and order situation is under control. Some people were attempting to come out of the bylanes but were controlled. Curfew imposed in the nearby areas,” says Udaipur SP Manoj Kumar.

“The violent incident that took place in Udaipur is less than condemned. The culprits should be given the strictest possible punishment. In the name of religion, hatred and violence, the intentions of spreading hatred, hatred and violence are deadly to our country and society. Together, we have to strengthen efforts for peace and non-violence,” the Congress leader tweeted in Hindi.

“The incident of ruthless and heart-wrenching murder of a youth in Udaipur is extremely sad and condemnable, I condemn it. The perpetrators of this inhuman act should be punished severely. I appeal to all to maintain peace and brotherhood,” the Congress MLA from Rajasthan's Tonk tweeted. 

“Both the accused of murder of youth in Udaipur have been arrested from Rajsamand. The investigation in this case will be done under the Case Officer Scheme and by ensuring speedy investigation, the criminals will be punished severely in the court. I again appeal to all to maintain peace,” Gehlot tweets.

In view of the incident under the Dhan Mandi Police Station limits in Udaipur today, Section 144 and curfew has been imposed in Dhanmandi, Ghantaghar, Hathipol, Ambamata, Surajpol, Bhupalpura and Savina PS areas of Udaipur district. This will be effective until further orders, say police.

Protests have erupted on the streets of Udaipur following the murder in broad daylight in Udaipur's Maldas street area. Shops in the area have been closed following the incident.

“I condemn the gruesome murder in Udaipur Rajasthan. There can be no justification for it. Our party’s consistent stand is to oppose such violence. No one can take law in their own hands. We demand that the state govt takes strictest possible action. Rule of law must be upheld,” AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi tweeted.

Udaipur's district collector Tarachand Meena and superintendent Manoj Kumar have appealed to the general public to maintain calm.
