21:54 hrs IST: And that’s it.. Thank you for joining us. Until next time, it’s goodbye. Cheers!
Virat Kohli: “We didn’t feel like we had enough on the board at the break. But we knew if we had a good start we have a good chance of defending it. We knew if we don’t take wickets it would be difficult. To be honest, the wicket wasn’t easy to bat on throughout the day. Bhuvi’s spell became even more important because we knew the wrist-spinners would do damage in the middle. The deliveries he got the batsmen out with were unplayable.”
Kuldeep Yadav: “Initially, I was struggling to bowl in a particular area. It’s a game of cricket, everything happens. Last match, where I was hit for three sixes in an over, was a learning experience. Asked Mahi bhai what I should bowl, he said ‘tujhe jaisa lagta hai wo daal (bowl what you want)’. This is special for me, changed the game for us. Really proud moment.”
Steve Smith: “We were pretty happy with 250, thought we pulled things back pretty well. Did a really good job there. Batters though made poor decisions, and you can’t do that against a quality team like India. Stoinis was good at the end there, just needed someone to bat with. One of the top four needs to go on and make a hundred, just making poor decisions under pressure.”
21:35 hrs IST: OUT! And that’s it. India beat Australia by 50 runs to go 2-0 up in the five-match series.
21:24 hrs IST: SIX! Slower delivery from Pandya and Stoinis clobbers it straight over the bowler’s head for a maximum. First fifty in ODIs for Stoinis.
21:20 hrs IST: It’s all too easy for India now. The big question is what does Australia need to do to beat this Indian side?
STAT ATTACK - Kuldeep Yadav’s hattrick is also the 43rd in 3912 ODIs.
21:11 hrs IST: Seems a good strategy from both Stoinis and NCN. Play out the spinners and then attack the pacers , once they come.
21:07 hrs IST: Time for Matthew Wade to face the axe. Peter Handscomb is a much better option and a perfect fit at No. 4.
21:00 hrs IST: The player signed by Kolkata Knight Riders has ensured that India stay firmly on course for their eighth successive ODI win.
20:57 hrs IST: Meanwhile, the second ODI between England and West Indies at Trent Bridge has been called off due to incessant rain. Eoin Morgan’s men lead the five-match series 1-0.
20:52 hrs IST:Another good over from Chahal, just four runs off it. Australia are 152/8 after 34 overs.
20:45 hrs IST: WICKET! And yes, Kuldeep Yadav takes a hattrick. He becomes the third Indian to achieve the feat in ODIs. The other two are Chetan Sharma and Kapil Dev. What a moment for him!
20:42 hrs IST: OUT! Kuldeep gets two in two. Seems all over for Australia now. But most importantly, will Kuldeep take a hattrick?
20:37 hrs IST: FOUR! Short delivery from Pandya, Stoinis is in total control of the pull as he hits it to deep mid-wicket boundary. Australia need 105 off 108 balls.
20:30 hrs IST: Six runs and a wicket in the last two overs. Australia need 114 off 114 balls.
20:24 hrs IST: WICKET! And as said earlier, ‘80% of he job’ is done. Smith falls to Pandya. Short delivery, the Australian skipper went for the pull but was never in control and Ravindra Jadeja, Kedar Jadhav's substitute, takes a good running catch from deep mid-wicket.
20:21 hrs IST: Australia need 120 off 126 balls. Smith 55*, Stoinis 12*
20:15 hrs IST: FOUR! Fullish delivery from Kuldeep and Stoinis creams it in the gap between cover and cover point. Australia are 132/4 after 28 overs.
STAT ATTACK - Steve Smith is the fifth Australian to get a fifty on his 100th ODI. The other four are Geoff Marsh, Ricky Ponting, Michael Hussey and Shane Watson.
20:07 hrs IST: And the Australian captain gets his 18th half-century. Needs to hang in till the end.
20:06 hrs IST: Smith is just one run short of a well-deserved half-century and he will face Kuldeep Yadav.
20:04 hrs IST: FOUR! That is a clean strike from Stoinis. Pandya’s delivery was well-directed by the Aussie towards square leg. Australia will like that. Australia 120/4 in 25 overs, Smith 49*, Stoinis 5*
20:01 hrs IST: Hardik Pandya is bowling from the other end. He has a slip in place.
19:59 hrs IST: FOUR! Comes from captain Smith and it is the first boundary after 24 balls. He drives Kuldeep fluently. Australia 116/4 in 24 overs
19:57 hrs IST: Kuldeep Yadav is back into the attack.
19:56 hrs IST: Maiden wicket over from Chahal. Australia are 106/4 after 23 overs. Smith 40*, Stoinis 0*
19:54 hrs IST: OUT! Chahal gets rid of Maxwell. Just the wicket India wanted. Pressure back on Australia.
19:50 hrs IST: Stupendous over from Bumrah, only a run off it. Australia are 106/3 after 22 overs. Smith 40*, Maxwell 14*
19:46 hrs IST: Jasprit Bumrah (4-1-27-0) comes back into the attack.
19:42 hrs IST: Consecutive sixes from Maxwell. He’s the only Australian who has played Kuldeep well so far. Australia need 151 off 180 balls.
19:39 hrs IST: Chahal is generating some sharp turn. Smith holds the key here. If he goes, India can consider 80% of the job is done.
19:34 hrs IST: Glenn Maxwell is in at No. 5
19: 32 hrs IST: OUT! Lucky! Juicy full-toss from Chahal, Head hits it well but finds Pandey at mid-wicket.
19:28 hrs IST: Decent start from Kuldeep, just four runs off it. Australia are 80/2 after 16 overs. Head 36*, Smith 32*
19:25 hrs IST: Kuldeep Yadav comes into the attack
19:22 hrs IST: Single off the last ball for Head. Another good over from Chahal. Australia are 76/2 after 15 overs. Time for drinks.
19:16 hrs IST: FOUR! Too straight from Pandya, Head shuffles across and flicks it in the gap between wide long on and deep mid-wicket boundary.
19:12 hrs IST: Tidy over from Chahal, just three runs off it. Australia are 64/2 after 13 overs.
19:09 hrs IST: Here comes the second change in bowling - Yuzvendra Chahal. The leggie took three wickets in the last match.
19:06 hrs IST: FOUR! Half-volley from Pandya, Smith moves across and hits it through cover. Looks in top form!
19:03 hrs IST: There’s plenty of dew. Spinners could find it difficult to grip the ball. Australia are 49/2 after 11 overs.
18:59 hrs IST: Dot ball to finish off from Pandya. Australia are 47/2 after 10 overs. Head 23*, Smith 16*
18:55 hrs IST: FOUR! Touch short from Pandya, Head gets into position early and smacks it to deep mid-wicket boundary.
18:54 hrs IST: Hardik Pandya comes into the attack
18:52 hrs IST: This has to be one of the best spells from Bhuvneshwar Kumar throughout his international career. (5-2-7-2). Australia are 40/2 after 9 overs.
18:47 hrs IST: FOUR! Too full from Bumrah and Smith hits it well through mid-wicket. Typical Smith!
18:44 hrs IST: FOUR! This time, Bhuvneshwar misses the length. On Head’s pads and he just helps it to square leg boundary. Australia are 27/2 after 7 overs.
18:40 hrs IST: Expensive over from Bumrah, 12 runs off it. Australia are 22/2 after 6 overs. Head 11*, Smith 7*
18:37 hrs IST: Consecutive boundaries from Travis Head. Australia need more of these.
18:34 hrs IST: WICKET! Another beautiful delivery from Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Nips away, Warner gets a thick edge and Rahane takes a neat catch at second slip.
18:31 hrs IST: Another terrific over from Bumrah. Get a feeling another wicket is around the corner. Australia are 9/1 after 4 overs.
18:27 hrs IST: Steve Smith is in at No. 3
18:25 hrs IST: WICKET! This was coming. Cartwright didn’t look comfortable against the Indian. Sharp inswinger and the Australian has no answer to it. It’s also a maiden over from Bhuvi. Australia are 2/1 after 3 overs.
18:21 hrs IST: Great start by India’s new ball bowlers. Australia are 2/0 after 2 overs.
18:17 hrs IST: Jasprit Bumrah comes into the attack.
18:16 hrs IST: Magnificent start from Bhuvi. Sticking to the right length. No margin for error. Australia are 1/0 after first over.
18:13 hrs IST: Straightaway some shape for Bhuvi.
18:12 hrs IST: Time for Australia’s innings. David Warner and Hilton Cartwright make their way out in the middle. Bhuvi to bowl the first over for India.
STAT ATTACK - It’s the first time India have been bowled out batting first in an ODI since June 2015.
17:41 hrs IST: WICKET! And that’s it. India have been all out for 252. Chahal is the last one to fall. Tricky target for the Aussies. The wicket is slower and Indian spinners will hold the key here. We’ll be back in a few minutes time.
17:38 hrs IST: OUT! Full-toss from Richardson, Pandya wants to hit it towards cover, but hit it much straighter and finds Warner at long-off.
17:37 hrs IST: Richardson to bowl the final six balls.
17:36 hrs IST: Excellent over from Cummins, seven runs and a wicket (of Kuldeep Yadav). India are 246/8 after 49 overs.
17:32 hrs IST: Cummins to bowl the penultimate over.
17:31 hrs IST: OUT! Bhuvneshwar skies one but doesn’t get enough power on it and Maxwell takes a good running catch from long on. India are 239/7 after 48 overs.
17:28 hrs IST: Play resumes, much to the delight of fans.
17:25 hrs IST: The stumps are put in place. Play should start soon.
17:19 hrs IST: Pandya was caught off a no ball, but it was decided by the third umpire. In process, he was run out courtesy a Steve Smith throw from cover. The Australian captain is arguing that the ball was not dead. Now if a batsman is walking under a misapprehension that he’s out, the umpires will signal dead ball & no further action can be taken.
17:16 hrs IST: Good news. The rain has stopped and the covers are being taken off.
17:12 hrs IST: And it has started raining at the Eden Gardens. We’ll keep you posted.
17:07 hrs IST: Seven runs off the over. Nathan Coulter-Nile finishes with the figures of 3/51. India are 233/6 after 47 overs.
17:04 hrs IST: Bhuvneshwar has smashed one into Hardik Pandya’s helmet but lluckily, the all-rounder seems fine. Was scary though!
17:00 hrs IST: Slower deliveries doing the job for Australia. Twenty-three balls since the last boundary. India are 226/6 after 46 overs.
16:56 hrs IST: This is brilliant stuff from Australia. Even singles are hard to come by. India are 222/6 after 45 overs.
16:52 hrs IST: Just the kind of over Australia need at this stage. Stoinis it is, just two runs off his eighth. India are 220/6 after 44 overs.
16:48 hrs IST: Good over for India, eight runs off it. They are 218/6 after 43 overs.
16:45 hrs IST: FOUR! Short and wide from Cummins and Pandya slaps it to the left of the fielder at mid-off for his second boundary. A rare loose delivery from the Australian.
16:42 hrs IST: This has been an incredible spell from Cummins. No wickets for him but has kept things tight. One of the main reasons why NCN has been able to pick three wickets (so far).
16:39 hrs IST: 300 looked very much possible, but the three quick wickets has changed things dramatically.
16:36 hrs IST: Twelve runs, two wickets in the last three overs. India are 207/6 after 40 overs. All eyes on Pandya now.
16:33 hrs IST: OUT! Seam up delivery from Richardson and Dhoni chips it straight to Smith at short cover. It stopped on the pitch and that’s why there was no power on that shot. India in a spot of bother now.
16:31 hrs IST: Brilliant over from Cummins, just three runs off it. India are 204/5 after 39 overs.
16:28 hrs IST: India need to finish well here. Can Dhoni and Pandya repeat their Chennai heroics?
16:26 hrs IST: Hardik Pandya comes in at No. 7. India are 201/5 after 38 overs.
16:23 hrs IST: WICKET! And Kohli is gone. Deserved a hundred. Slower delivery from NCN, Kohli looks to work it towards third man but gets an inside edge and it hits the stumps.
16:20 hrs IST: Good over for Australia despite the boundary from Kohli. India are 195/4 after 37 overs.
16:16 hrs IST: FOUR! And ‘Magnificent Mahedra’ -- as Ian Bishop says -- gets off the mark with a boundary. Short delivery and the former skipper hooks it to deep backward square leg boundary. India are 190/4 after 36 overs.
16:14 hrs IST: MS Dhoni comes to the crease.
16:12 hrs IST: OUT! Loose shot from Jadhav. Looks to hit it past the point region but finds Maxwell. Wicket at the wrong time for India.
16:08 hrs IST: SIX! Width on offer from Stoinis and Jadhav smacks it over backward point for a maximum.
16:06 hrs IST: FOUR! And again. Poor delivery from Agar, straying down leg, Jadhav helps it past the short fine leg fielder. Moves to 17. India are 176/3 after 34 overs.
16:05 hrs IST: FOUR! Tossed up from Agar, Jadhav makes room and lifts it over cover. Much needed boundary for the hosts.
16:02 hrs IST: Few words exchanged between Kohli and Wade. For sure, it’s an India-Australia series now. There was hardly anything witnessed in Chennai.
STAT ATTACK India have won 11, lost eight and one game was abandoned in their 20 ODIs at the Eden Gardens so far.
15:55 hrs IST: Plenty of big hitters to come for India. Australia in desperate need of wickets (especially of Kohli).
15:50 hrs IST: Virat Kohli looks well set for another ton. India are 154/3 after 31 overs. Kohli 72*, Jadhav 7*
15:45 hrs IST: The run rate has dipped considerably after the two quick dismissals. IND 145/3 after 30 overs.

15:40 hrs IST: FOUR! Length ball from Richardson, Kohli shuffles and hits it well in the gap between long on and deep mid-wicket boundary.
15:39 hrs IST: Twenty seven balls since the last boundary. India are 134/3 after 28 overs. Kohli 59*, Jadhav 1*
15:36 hrs IST: Kedar Jadhav now. India need another big partnership here
15:35 hrs IST: WICKET! Pandey b Agar 3(13). Quicker delivery, Pandey looks to cut but misses and it hits the off-stump.
15:33 hrs IST: Tidy back to back overs from Coulter-Nile. Australia need more of these (and wickets too). India are 131/2 after 27 overs.
15:30 hrs IST: At this rate, it shouldn’t be difficult for India to score 350. With Jadhav, Dhoni and Pandya yet to come, the total seems gettable.
15:26 hrs IST: Good over from Coulter-Nile, only three runs off it. India are 124/2 after 25 overs. Kohli 54*, Pandey 1*
15:21 hrs IST: Manish Pandey is in at No. 4. India are 121/2 after 24 overs.
15:20 hrs IST: WICKET! The century stand has been broken. Rahane is run out for 55. To give competition to Shikhar Dhawan, the Mumbaikar needs to slam hundreds.
15:17 hrs IST: Travis Head, right-arm offspinner, comes into the attack.
15:15 hrs IST: Single and that’s fifty for Rahane. Needs to get past the three-figure mark. India on course for a total above 350.
STAT ATTACK - This is Kohli’s fourth 50+ score in his last six innings at the Eden Gardens.
15:10 hrs IST: Single and that’s fifty for Kohli, 45th in ODIs. What an innings this has been from the skipper!
15:07 hrs IST: Cummins finishes half his overs. Just 11 runs but it’s the wickets column that matters the most. India are 104/1 after 21 overs.
15:03 hrs IST: Cummins comes back for his second spell
15:02 hrs IST: FOUR! Flatter delivery from Agar, Kohli just pushes it past the fielder at short third man. Moves into 40s. India are 101/1 after 20 overs.
14:59 hrs IST: The heat is taking a toll on the players. But the good news is the skies are clear (as of now). India are 91/1 after 19 overs.
14:54 hrs IST: Stupendous over from Agar, just a run off it. India are 83/1 after 18 overs.
14:51 hrs IST: Boundaries have dried up in the last few overs but the scoring rate is still good. India are 82/1 after 17 overs.
14:47 hrs IST: Five runs off Agar’s second. India are 77/1 after 16 overs. Stoinis to continue.
STAT ATTACK - This is the second meeting between both sides at Eden Gardens. Australia won the first encounter, back in 2003, by 37 runs.
14:40 hrs IST: Fifteen balls since the last boundary. India are 72/1 after 15 overs. Time for drinks.
14:36 hrs IST: Decent start from Agar. Fifty-run partnership between Rahane and Kohli. India are 70/1 after 14 overs.
14:34 hrs IST: Ashton Agar, left-arm spinner, comes into the attack.
14:33 hrs IST: And we’re back. Single off the last ball for Rahane. India are 64/1 after 13 overs. Rahane 31*, Kohli 23*
14:31 hrs IST: Bit of a delay. Wade is struggling. Not sure of what the issue is.
14:28 hrs IST: FOUR! Overpitched from Richardson, Kohli leans into the drive and caresses it in the gap between cover and mid-off. As good as it gets!
14:26 hrs IST: Physio attending to Richardson at the boundary. Seems to an issue with his back. India are 56/1 after 12 overs.
STAT ATTACK - The average score in the last five ODIs at the Eden Gardens is 311.
14:21 hrs IST: FOUR! Short delivery from Richardson and Kohli pulls it well to the deep square leg boundary. If there’s no fielder at that position, what’s the point in bowling that ball to someone, who is known to be a good player of short deliveries. India are 50/1 after 11 overs.
14:19 hrs IST: Powerplay 2 and Richardson to start. His only five-wicket haul came against India at Canberra in 2016.
14:18 hrs IST: Great start from Stoinis, just a run off it. India are 44/1 after 10 overs.
14:14 hrs IST: Marcus Stoinis comes into the attack. Maybe, another over for NCN would have helped.
14:11 hrs IST: FOUR! And Kohli joins the party. Length ball from Richardson and the Indian captain punches it through cover. Not much swing for the Australian
14:09 hrs IST: Here comes the first change in bowling - Kane Richardson
14:08 hrs IST:Another expensive over from NCN. It’s been a brilliant start from Rahane though. Five boundaries in no time. India are 34/1 after 8 overs.
14:05 hrs IST: FOUR! Fuller delivery from Nathan Coulter-Nile, outside off, Rahane times it well through extra cover.
14:04 hrs IST: Maiden over from Cummins. Kohli looks a bit cautious against him. India are 26/1 after 7 overs.
14:02 hrs IST: Coulter-Nile has stuck to a line just outside off-stump, occasionally getting the ball to swing away slightly. He has displayed control and that should be the cue for the batsmen to exercise more caution against him.
13:59 hrs IST: FOUR! Full and wide from Coulter-Nile, swings away a bit, Rahane bends and works it through cover. Moves to 15. India are 26/1 after 6 overs.
13:56 hrs IST: In walks skipper Virat Kohli at No. 3
13:55 hrs IST: OUT! No double century for Rohit today. Full and swinging away from Rohit, he looks to drive but the ball hits the toe-end of his bat and Coulter-Nile takes a good catch in the followthrough.
13:53 hrs IST: What an over from Cummins! Rahane finding it tough to adjust. India are 19/0 after 5 overs.
13:49 hrs IST: Cummins to continue
13:47 hrs IST: Costly over from Couler-Nile, nine runs off it. India are 18/0 after 4 overs.
13:45 hrs IST: FOUR! Another half-volley and this time it’s Rahane -- who times it sweetly through cover.
13:43 hrs IST: Dot ball to finish off from Cummins. Decent over despite the boundary. India are 9/0 after 3 overs.
13:41 hrs IST: FOUR! Gentle half-volley from Cummins, Rohit gets into position early and helps it through cover for his first boundary. Sign of things to come?
13:38 hrs IST: Good back to back overs from Australia. India are 5/0 after 2 overs.
13:37 hrs IST: A dreadful run of injuries prompted NCN of becoming a Twenty20 gun-for-hire, but after a welcome return to fitness the 29-year-old is now eyeing a Test berth.
13:35 hrs IST: Nathan Coulter-Nile comes into the attack. He took three wickets in the Chennai game.
13:34 hrs IST: Excellent start from Cummins. Sticking to the right length. India are 3/0 after first over.
13:33 hrs IST: Here comes Rohit Sharma - the man who owns this ground. It’s been third years now since that famous 264.
13:32 hrs IST: Another short of a length delivery from Cummins and Rahane works it to third man for his first runs of the day.
13:30 hrs IST: Steep bounce for Cummins early on. Rahane letting it go past him.
13:29 hrs IST: Time for live action. Ajinkya Rahane to take strike. Pat Cummins to start the proceedings for the visitors.
13:27 hrs IST: Australia have a perfect record at this venue, winning both their matches so far.
13:25 hrs IST: Teams are out there, lining up for their national anthems.
13:21 hrs IST: Pitch report from Sunil Gavaskar and Brett Lee: “Looks like a very good pitch. Last season, it had a two-pace quality to it. This one may not have that. Last few games over here have produced more than 300 runs.”
13:15 hrs IST: India have won back to back games over Australia for the first time since 2013.
STAT ATTACK - Steve Smith, playing his 100th ODI, is now the 27th Australian to reach triple figures in the format.
13:04 hrs IST: So India are unchanged. As for Australia, all-rounder Ashton Agar replaces leggie Adam Zampa while Kane Richardson comes in for James Faulkner.
13:03 hrs IST: Here are the playing XI of both teams -
Australia: David Warner, Hilton Cartwright, Steven Smith(c), Travis Head, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade(wk), Ashton Agar, Kane Richardson, Pat Cummins, Nathan Coulter-Nile
India: Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Virat Kohli(c), Manish Pandey, Kedar Jadhav, MS Dhoni(wk), Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah
13:02 hrs IST: India have won the toss and have opted to bat. Steve Smith is playing his 100th ODI.
12:55 hrs IST: Toss in a short while
12:52 pm IST: It’s been raining over the last 48 hours. The Indian and Australian teams missed outdoor nets due to a wet outfield. Most of Eden Gardens have been under covers.
12:46 PM IST: Rain looms large over Kolkata. It’s cloudy over the Eden Gardens and the toss could be delayed.
The Australians were excited at the look and feel of the Eden Gardens pitch on Wednesday. The grassy surface will inspire the Australian quickies Pat Cummins, Nathan Coulter-Nile and James Faulkner, who did well on a relatively placid Chepauk deck in the first ODI in Chennai on September 17. India won by 26 runs in a match affected by rain. (1st ODI SCORECARD | SCHEDULE)
India are well equipped in both spin and pace. Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Hardik Pandya are capable users of the new ball but Australia’s game plan against the rookie wrist spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav will be interesting to see today. (PREVIEW)
There is forecast for rain but that’s an occupational hazard for modern-day cricketers. The average score in the last five ODIs at Eden Gardens is 311.
