Wasn't it a bit too warm for January 1? Remember the overcast skies of earlier years, fog swirling about till late morning and sun a weak orb in the heavens? Right. It was warm, says the weather office. At 25 degree Celsius, it was the warmest New Year in five years.

But who wanted it freezing? Not Sunil Grover. He was ecstatic he got to take his family out on a bright and sunny afternoon - at the Indraprastha Park. "It was an ideal way to start off the new year," he said. Thousands of others had the same idea— this and most other parts and India Gate were swamped like never before.

Here is the met mumbo-jumbo for those who can understand and those who must know the reason behind every little change in weather: Westerly disturbance passing over north India. "Every time this happens," said Mausam Vibhag director B P Yadav, "the minimum temperature spikes making the weather warm."

This, goes the weather logic, is accompanied by high and clear visibility. In two words: No fog. The only fog around Saturday night was in the minds of revelers returning home late. Otherwise,  there used to be enough tales of couples smacking up their midnight kiss in their car lost miles from wherever they wanted to be for that sacred ritual.

Most couples were bang on target last night.

But weather office says the New Year warmth is not going to last long. Fog and chill will be back. Nothing in the weatherman's book lasts long anyway
