Veteran screen and stage actor Ajit Bandopadhyay, who was part of Satyajit Ray's popular films like

, died at a city nursing home on Friday after a protracted illness. He was 94, sources in the film industry said.
Entering the film world in 1946, Bandopadhyay shot into fame for his lead role in Santi and Pratima. He also acted in films like Krishnakanter Will, Michael Madhusudan and Uttar Phalguni.
His performance in Sandip Ray's Gupi Bagha Phire Elo in the mid-90s earned him a lot of fame. As a stage actor, Bandopadhyay was known for his performances in Nabanna, Ulka and Shyamali.
