Another Anpara unit conks off

THE ENTIRE State reeled under an acute power crisis after demand-supply gap further widened on Tuesday, as one more power generation unit at Anpara went out of order. The State Capital, which is otherwise exempted from official rostering, also experienced power cuts, as lines went on tripping due to low frequency of the grid. The situation was especially bad in the trans-Gomti area, which went without electricity for around 1 and a half hour in the morning and for over two hours in the evening.

The power crisis in the State intensified today following closure of one more unit of 210 MW at the Anpara thermal house, coupled with shooting demand for power due to the continuing chilly weather conditions. One 210 MW unit had collapsed on Monday.

Against the 7,000 MW demand, the total power available from all the sources including 2100 MW thermal, was only around 500 MW, with the gap as high as around 2,000. The extreme paucity of power led the UPPCL to impose heavy power cuts throughout the State. The frequency of the grid was reported to be lower than normal. Transmission lines from some 220 KV sub-stations tripped several times at under-frequency in the city.

However, Wednesday will pose a real challenge to the UPPCL. The UPPCL management has directed its system control room to provide uninterrupted power supply to around two dozens of towns including all the KAVAL towns tomorrow between 5 am and 12 pm, in view of the festival of Id-ul-Azha. But how it does it, is the big question.
