Ajanta Caves, Aurangabad: The richly decorated Buddhist caves contain frescoes and sculptures.

Ellora Caves, Aurangabad: Spectacular rock-cut caves and elaborate sculptures can be found at this UNESCO World Heritage site that is over 10 centuries old.

Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka, Bhopal: The pre-historic paintings here depict life in the Neolithic age.

Badami Cave Temples, Badami, Karnataka: On offer here are beautiful carvings in stone.

Kanheri Caves, Mumbai: Considered to be in use from the 1st century BC to the 9th century AD, primarily by Buddhist monks, the caves were chiseled out of a massive basaltic rock.

Borra Caves, Visakhapatnam: It is an interesting place to visit as it boasts of natural stalagmites, a worthy sight.

Udayagiri Caves, Bhubaneswar: The history associated with this cave is mind boggling. Just keep an eye out for the monkeys.

Karla Caves, Lonavala: The caves may not be that great in comparison to the ones listed above, but do make the climb for its beautiful scenic view.
