"I condemn the yesterday's killing of Anil Mazumdar. I have directed Director General of Police to arrest the culprits at the earliest," Gogoi told reporters at Silchar in Cachar district.

"It is our duty to give protection to everybody, particularly to journalists, and necessary steps will be taken in this direction," he said.

Director General of Police GM Srivastava in Guwahati said investigations into the case has already begun and primary evidences have been collected from the site.

Some cartridges of 9 mm pistol have been found from the site and these have been sent for forensic tests, he said.

"We have to probe all the angles, including his relationship with militant outfit ULFA," the DGP said.
