Govinda defeats Ram Naik

Govinda was fighting his maiden electoral battle while Naik was seeking a fifth consecutive term from the constituency.

Crackers were burst and people danced in the streets as film star and Congress candidate Govinda on Thursday wrested the Mumbai North seat from Petroleum Minister Ram Naik of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Govinda was fighting his maiden electoral battle while Naik was seeking a fifth consecutive term from the constituency.

Govinda had added glamour to the campaign and had even persuaded Congress president Sonia Gandhi to address an election meeting for him.
