Insurgents can vote: CEC

The members of banned outfits ULFA, NDFB and other insurgent groups can cast their vote in the upcoming Assembly elections in Assam if their names figure in the electoral roll, Chief Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi on Thursday said.

The members of banned outfits ULFA, NDFB and other insurgent groups can cast their vote in the upcoming Assembly elections in Assam if their names figure in the electoral roll, Chief Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi on Thursday said.

"They can vote if their names are in the voters roll. There is no law which can stop them from voting. But anybody not in the voters roll, including me, cannot vote," he said at a press conference when asked if a member of a banned outfit can vote.

Asked if ULFA chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa and other ULFA cadres, now out on parole, could exercise their franchise, he said, "Technically all those in the voters list can vote."
