JNU students have asked the university to increase security instead of trying to shut down their favourite dhabas. Students went on strike this week after authorities tried to enforce a ban to get dhabas to close before midnight because of security issues on campus.
The university plans to instal tea and coffee vending machines to compensate. Sony Kunjappa, NSUI general secretary, said, “This move will ruin the JNU culture where students study at night while having chai, coffee and paranthas.” Students don’t want the dhabas shut, but said the university needed to up its security measures. Antara Raychaudhary, an MA student, said, “Recently, some outsiders misbehaved with students, including girls, at a dhaba. But a shutdown is not the solution. Why not increase security rather than spoil tradition?”
