Many metro towns are quake-prone

Delivering his keynote address on 'Seismic Microzonation of Mega Cities' at the inaugural session of the national seminar on 'Earthquake: Technology and Management' that got underway at Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT) on Saturday, Dr Rao called for a comprehensive study to be carried out in cities like New Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai for getting the real picture of the danger posed by earthquakes.

The two-day national seminar is being organised by the Civil Engineering Department of MNNIT in co-operation with the Indian Geotechnical Society (Allahabad Chapter).

Earlier the seminar was inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor of Rani Lakshmi Bai Institute of Physical Education, Gwalior, Maj Gen SN Mukherjee. Lamenting over the politicisation of the national calamities, Maj Gen. Mukherjee said that a mechanism should be developed to provide instant relief to affected persons. He also called upon the youths to join the Geo-Technical Society for the sake of the nation.

Presiding over the inaugural function, Director of MNNIT, Prof AB Samaddar said that engineers and scientists should come forward to mitigate natural disasters.
Chairman of the seminar RK Srivastava in his welcome speech stressed over the need for implementing the National Building Code-2005.

Informing about the seminar, the organising secretary Dr RP Tiwari informed that seminar has been divided into six technical sessions with each being chaired by eminent experts and being addressed by invited speakers.

Later, Dr Tiwari delivered the vote of thanks and urged more and more industrial houses to extend financial aid in the research related to earthquakes. A souvenir was also released on the occasion.

Prominent scientists who delivered lectures on day one included Arvind K Jain on 'Earthquake prediction--a new perspective', RD Gupta and RK Srivastava on 'Geo-spatial technologies for natural disaster management', Mohammad Muzzammil on 'An ANN model for attenuation of peak ground acceleration', Debarti Datt and Siddharth Ghosh on 'Probabilistic response spectra in earthquake engineering: an overall review'.

Swami Saran, MN Viladkar and Shilpa Mittal, SK Singh, Sarita Singla and Yashu Handa presented paper on 'Base isolation techniques for structures prone to high seismic risk', Mahima Singh on 'Vulnerability assessment of buildings of Allahabad with respect to earthquake', Sarita Singla, SK Singh, Pankaj Mittal and Kavish Bibra on 'Earthquake resistant asymmetric multi-storeyed buildings with provision of shear walls', KC Tare and RK Ingle on 'Response comparison of building using push over analysis', Shakeel Ahmad and Md Ghalib Aziz on 'Torsional response of building structures to seismic forces'.
