Museveni has won Uganda's first multiparty elections in 25 years

The official results of the Uganda polls have been announced. Uganda's incumbent President Yoweri Museveni has won re-election in the country's first multiparty elections in 25 years.

The official tally, based on 80 percent of the polling stations reporting results, showed Museveni with 60.64 percent of the vote, opposition leader Kizza Besigye with 36.04 percent and the other three candidates sharing a little more than 3 percent.

Electoral officials said they had counted 5,792,915 votes. More than 10.45 million people registered to vote and the turnout has been estimated at about 65 percent.
