A consensus in this regard has been reached in a meeting of NIT directors held at Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology-Bhopal, recently.

“All directors were of the view that a better co-ordination is needed among NITs for taking research and academic standards to a new height,” said director of Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT) Prof Arun Baran Samaddar, who has been entrusted with the responsibility of chalking out the NITNet modalities and its structure.

He said that efforts were being made to materialise the concepts and plans mooted in the Vision-2020 Plan for the NITs and the decision to set up a NITNet is part of that very effort.

“The ambitious NITNet will not only facilitate better communication and access between teachers, experts and the students of all the 18 NITs of the country but also aid in exchange of innovative academic ideas and research projects,” he explained.

The proposed NITNet will be made operational with the already existing infrastructure of the NITs and will be a highly interactive interface. The NITNet is also being envisioned as a platform for various educational shopping and as a reliable tool of communication during times of emergencies and turmoil.

“A detailed proposal having the requisition of equipment and accessories required for an error-free NITNet will be finalised soon. The proposed NITNet will have its nucleus centre at MNNIT and which will facilitate as well as co-ordinate its functioning,” Prof Samaddar said. He informed that the proposal would be sent to the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) after the finalisation of its structure and its approval by the directors of the 18 NITs.

“In another major decision, the NIT directors unequivocally gave a go ahead for setting up of a Directors’ Conclave that will act as a permanent forum for the interaction of NIT directors. It is hoped that this will greatly help in speeding up of activities and initiatives that are to be taken jointly. It will also help in exchange of ideas regarding unique efforts being initiated by one NIT and could be suitable for others too,” Prof Samaddar said.

It may be mentioned that the meeting of the NIT directors was called at NIT-Bhopal to discuss various issues like procurement of efficient faculty members, revision of salary structure of teaching and non-teaching staff members and also the structure of fringe benefits provided to the employees.

Several decisions were also taken for the welfare of the employees during the meet.
