The people of Vadkara, 461 km from Thiruvananthapuram, said that red coloured rain drops fell at a few places at around 9 in the morning.

"We were totally surprised when we saw that the colour of rainwater was red or had shades of red. We have collected it," some residents said.

Scientists at the Centre for Earth Science Studies (CESS) here and the Centre for Water Resources Development and Management (CWDRM) in Kozhikode have been told about the incident. They are collecting samples of the rainwater for tests and analysis.

In September 2001, some red raindrops came down near Changnacherry in Kottayam district.

Speaking to IANS, PS Harikumar, a scientist at CWDRM, said he had only heard of reports of red rain but was yet to witness it.

"We are expecting samples for analysis. Until then I have nothing to say," said Harikumar.
