"This is the crucial period when most of the students come under tremendous pressure as they have to take an important decision regarding their career," feels psychiatrist Dr Kamlesh Tiwari of Bureau of Psychology.

At the moment Dr Tiwari claims of handling most of the cases pertaining to the career counselling of the teenagers and also a few cases of depression.

"Career counselling is needed by those who are confused about their actual capabilities and also unable to evaluate themselves.

Depression occurs when the students are forced by their parents to opt for the subject which is against their liking and interest. It has to be kept in mind that all the children possess different level of IQs (Intelligence Quotient) and they cannot be judged by a single standard," said Dr Tiwari.

"Parental pressure is the origin of all the problems. It is necessary for the students to choose the career of their own choice without succumbing to any kind of pressure. This not only makes them responsible but also organised, competitive and they manage to excel in the field. However, a proper counselling is a must which helps in analysing one's capabilities and strength," he added.

Parental pressure is hazardous for cognitive development of a child, feels Dr Tiwari.

"I have also come across cases where negative thinking is increasing among the students. They are falling prey to the feelings of low self-esteem and they are also developing suicidal tendencies. They must not choose the wrong career since each individual does not have the capability to become a doctor or an engineer," he added.

Besides, the parents must have regular communication with their children instead of overburdening them with their boundless expectations, said Dr Tiwari.

"I feel the children must opt for career counselling after clearing their High School examinations," he added.
