Skim off the creamy layer

Apropos of Some merit to quotas (June 7), a sizeable section of the community availing reservation belong to the 'creamy layer'. Thus, the idea of administering social justice by means of reservation defies all logic. Quite clearly, the government does not want to face the ire of this elite section. The benefit of reservation must be given to the poor and deserving, cutting across caste lines.

Udit Raj’s statement that people with higher marks are not necessarily successful in that particular field is just another absurd argument to demand unconstitutional quotas. And how can the author guarantee that the advantages of reservation will not be reaped by the rich among the so-called ‘backward class’.

Careful on Kashmir

I whole-heartedly endorse the opinion expressed by Vikram Sood in Taking a wrong turn (June 6). All these years, both the government and the media have committed blunder after blunder in its handling of the Kashmir issue, enabling Islamabad and fundamentalists to succeed in their evil intentions.

Trial by media

Apropos of Surrender to the media (June 7), it is difficult to believe that the media attention generated in a high profile criminal case would effect the impartial dispensation of justice. If this is true, then God save our judicial system.

Stocks down

Your latest effort to upgrade the paper with the incorporation of HT-2 is praiseworthy. But I was shocked to see that you have decided to cut down on information in the new version of the 'Stock Market' page. These used to be of immense use for investors.
