According to Overseas Friends of the Bharatiya Janata Party (OFBJP) president Subrahmanyam Vemuri, the organisation has taken a qualified view of Advani's comments praising Jinnah.

"I would wait for him to clarify. Hindus here are disappointed at the media reports about what Advani said," Vemuri said.

"Advani has lived a whole political life which has seen India's partition. He knows the whole story of what happened. Perhaps his comments were aimed at reminding Pakistan about an unfulfilled promise about a secular state. No one is going to praise Jinnah as secular," Vemuri told IANS.

He said he would wait for Advani's explanation about what he meant while making those comments during his Pakistan visit.

Asked if he thought Advani's resignation should be withdrawn he said: "I can't comment on that but we are certainly interested in what Advani has to say in terms of what he meant."
