However, it turned out to be a drive aimed at unearthing hidden unauthorised weapons.
Replete with their headgear and semi-automatic rifles in hand RAF men in uniform stood on both sides of the road to send signals that the drive was not launched casually.
“These days you never know who was there in the vehicle, he could be a terrorist hard-core criminal or any other miscreant,” said a police officer. He admitted that the drive was inspired post-Varanasi blasts, which had forced the cops to be extra vigilant.Checking of big cars, especially those with tinted glasses, made one feel that cops meant business. Smaller cars like Maruti and others were allowed to go unchecked.
What instilled confidence among the onlookers was that cops did not allow even vehicles carrying flag of Samajwadi Party go unchecked.
Four such vehicles were stopped within the half-an-hour drive. Though nothing special was found during the drive but police forced a ‘netaji’ to send his men home to get his driving license, which he was not carrying.
