Addressing a rally to thank Congress workers who had helped bring the party back to power in the state, Gandhi said: “When the Congress was in power in the state, we had taken up the cause of farmers and weaker sections of the society. Now, too, the Congress will try to empower weaker sections of the society, provide facilities to the farmers and employment to the youth.”

Gandhi also attacked sectarian forces and said people don't trust those who play politics in the name of caste and religion.

The Congress defeated the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to come back to power in the state after the December 2008 elections. Ashok Gehlot took over from Vasundhara Raje as chief minister.
