Ever since she started campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections, Urmila Matondkar, Congress’s star candidate from Mumbai North, has had a staunch, yet silent supporter. Matondkar’s husband, Mohsin Akhtar Mir, is by the actor’s side always, attending all her campaigns, political programmes and meetings, without making his presence felt.

While asked as to what motivates him to do this, he says “I am just being a good husband and supporting my wife,” while emphasising that he wants no publicity for this. The producer, who married the actor in a private ceremony in 2016 , is seen towards the end of the crowd, silently supporting his wife without posing for the cameras and hardly ever being noticed by those around. Urmila has been targeted on social media as several trolls targeted her for getting married to a Muslim, along with several false rumours of the actor’s conversion post marriage doing the rounds. Mohsin, who is from Kashmir and has spent all his life in the country, with over 16 years in Maharashtra, does not seem to be affected by the fake news.

Mohsin says that it has been a “conscious decision to not pay attention to the dirty trolling”. Party workers who see him closely say that he has almost made the car his second home as he is constantly touring the constituency with very little rest.

At an event held in Borivli, Urmila said that she has been targeted for her inter-religion marriage ever since her name has been announced. “Marrying a person of my choice is a right that the Constitution has given me. Thus, I have decided to shrug away all these nonsensical things that people have resorted to,” she said.
