If Congress is voted to power, money will be sent directly to accounts of the poor opened by the Narendra Modi government, party president Rahul Gandhi said at a rally in Jalore, Rajasthan, on Thursday.

“During the five years of Modi’s government, big promises were made. Everyone was told that Rs 15 lakh will be deposited in their accounts. Did anyone receive the money?” he asked, referring to Modi’s campaign pitch in 2014.

“Under Nyay, money will be sent directly to accounts, which will increase purchasing power, demand, create jobs,” he said, referring to the Congress’s promised minimum income scheme Nunyatam Aay Yojna (Nyay), which guarantees Rs 72,000 to the 20% of the country’s poorest people, annually.

Later, at an election rally in Kota, he said, “I want to thank Modi ji for opening bank accounts. I am going to deposit money of Nyay scheme in the same accounts. The money will be deposited directly in bank accounts of women of families.”

A flagship financial inclusion scheme started by the centre, titled Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), has opened zero balance accounts for citizens to aid direct remittances on subsidies. As per official figures, until last August, 32.25 crore accounts have been opened.

Gandhi stressed that the money deposited through the Nyay scheme will create job opportunities for the youth without taxing the middle class.

“PM Narendra Modi did injustice with people of the country in the last five years. Demonetisation and GST were ways to rob poor, labourers, small traders of their money. Nyay scheme will benefit them,” he said, referring to the centre’s bid to flush out black money by devaluing of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 denominations in November 2016. The Goods and Services Tax was introduced in July 2017, to subsume all previous indirect taxes.

In Jalore Gandhi said that the Congress will create “one Hindustan”. “If rich people are not jailed for not paying off loans then farmers too will not be jailed. If lakhs and crores are given to them then the same will be given to farmers, labourers, tribals, Dalits and small traders. The country will not be divided in two Hindustans. There will be one Hindustan where justice will be done.”

“People have not forgotten level of corruption during UPA government. Now, these Congress people questioning Modi, doesn’t suit them. The country has witnessed constant development in the last five years and people want to see Modi as prime minister again,” Rajasthan BJP spokesperson Mukesh Pareek said.

Thirteen of Rajasthan’s 25 Lok Sabha seats will go to polls in the fourth phase of the general elections, to be held on April 29.
