Lok Sabha Elections 2019: For Congress, law graduates front runners to get nomination in Uttarakhand

Senior Congress leaders said the main contenders for Lok Sabha tickets in Uttarakhand are party state unit president Pritam Singh, former chief minister and AICC general secretary Harish Rawat , Mahendra Singh Pal , Pradeep Tamta and Manish Khanduri.

The majority of Uttarakhand Congress leaders, who are front runners to get party nomination to contest the April 11 Lok Sabha elections in the state, are law graduates with an LLB degree.

Senior Congress leaders said the main contenders are party state unit president Pritam Singh form Tehri Garhwal Lok Sabha constituency, former chief minister and AICC general secretary Harish Rawat from Haridwar, Mahendra Singh Pal from Nainital, Pradeep Tamta from Almora seat and Manish Khanduri from Pauri Garhwal.

Among them, Singh, Rawat, Pal and Tamta have law degrees. Pritam Singh, who is at present a legislator from Chakrata constituency in the state assembly, would be contesting the general elections for the first time, if given a ticket by the party.

He is a law graduate from DAV College in Dehradun. Similarly, Rawat who has fought Lok Sabha elections eight times, would be contesting for the ninth time if given ticket. He too holds a law degree from Lucknow University, Uttar Pradesh.Tamta, who is at present a member of Rajya Sabha from Uttarakhand, holds is a law graduate from Kumaon University, Nainital.

Dehradun-based political analyst SMA Kazmi said, “Lawyers or LLB graduates joining politics has a pre-independence history which continued after independence.”

“It largely happens because while studying law one gets more aware about his rights. He also knows it better, that how a law is made. An LLB tends to join politics which is evident with many contemporary politicians in almost all the prominent parties having a law degree,” he said.
