Lok Sabha elections 2019: In Bihar’s Purvi Champaran, BJP looks to make a comeback

The constituency has been a bastion of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with its Dr Sanjay Jaiswal winning the seat in both 2009 and 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

Purvi Champaran Lok Sabha constituency is one of the 40 parliamentary constituencies in Bihar in eastern India. This constituency came into existence in 2008, following delimitation of the parliamentary constituencies based on the recommendations of the Delimitation Commission of India constituted in 2002.

The constituency has been a bastion of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with Union minister Radha Mohan Singh winning the seat in both 2009 and 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

There were 1,452,963 electorate in the Purvi Champaran Lok Sabha Constituency in 2014 elections, out of which 788,561 are male and the remaining 380,568 are female.

Bordered on the north with Nepal, Purvi Champaran has its headquarters at Motihari. According to the estimates of the 2011 census, out of total 5,099,371 population, there were 3,939,773 male and 2,077,047.

Voter turnout in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections was 56.62%.
