Malavika’s Mumbaistan: Mr Twinkle Toesmumbai Updated: Apr 28, 2018 14:06 IST
Karan Johar at the wedding on Wednesday.
Is there anything Karan Johar cannot do? After recently becoming the first Indian director to be honoured with a wax statue at Madame Tussaud, that paean to popular culture, word comes in he has now turner wedding performer and had danced onstage on Wednesday night in Delhi, during the sangeet of Tanushree Rungta, the daughter of business tycoon NL Rungta, who is marrying Akshay Jain to the song ‘Radha’ from his hit film Student Of The Year. Other performers included Katrina Kaif, Ranveer Singh, Shahid Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor, but given the applause he received, it was KJo who stole the show: he was also the host of the evening.
This isn’t the first time KJo has displayed the courage of his convulsions with great aplomb either. It’s his second performance to the same song within the week, as he had also displayed some impressive twinkle toe moves at Saudamini Mattu’s wedding reception in Mumbai this weekend.
Godman/woman (noun): A nimble footed, ever dancing-prancing, flamboyantly attired fiend, who preys upon the simple minded, through a diabolical mix of sex and money power (namely lotsa’ sex and all your money)
THE WEDDING BALL
We have long believed that those who work in India’s billion-dollar wedding industry must require great emotional intelligence to deal with brides and grooms, their parents, family and friends (and their egos and demands) during one of their most sensitive times.
And fittingly, this Wednesday evening saw a glittering function held at the Taj Palace, Mumbai, to recognise and honour these brave individuals at the first WeddingSutra Influencer awards. Put together by Parthip Thyagarajan and Madhulika Sachdeva Mathur, co-founders of the digital platform, the awards’ jury had an eclectic panel of judges, including designer Manish Malhotra, fashion entrepreneur Tina Tahiliani, media maven Pradeep Guha and IMG big boss Jaspreet Chandok, who had deliberated over many hours to arrive at a consensus. We spotted the who’s who of the wedding circuit all dressed in their wedding finery, including Gurleen M Puri (who had recently done the high-profile Ambani engagement in Goa), Bhavnesh Sawhney of Wedniksha (who had done the Dil Dhadakne Do style cruise wedding in the south of France last year), Aditya Motwane (who collected an award for his colleague Vandana Mohan), Punit Jasuja (who had pulled off the stunning Trishya Screwvala — Suhail Chandhok reception) and Devika Narian (who handled the decor for Virat and Anushka’s nuptials). And with individual tables designed by the masters of the trade (designer Nachiket Barve’s was inspired by the Midas touch and featured hand-painted roses and candles), and with abundant glamour in the form of Nisha Jamval, Kim Sharma, Chayya Momaya and Tinaz Doshi, amongst others, it was a night when the wedding industry took a much deserved bow…
THEN WE TAKE SOHO
It appears there’s no stopping fashion designer and entrepreneur Anita Dongre, who currently has more than 100 stores in India. The reclusive Sindhi, who has dressed the likes of Kate Middleton and Sophie Grégoire Trudeau (well, the latter might not be a recommendation) had made a successful entry into the New York market last year when she opened her first American store on a piece of prime Manhattan real estate for her sustainable fashion label, Grassroots. Now word comes in that the designer is not stopping and is set to open her flagship couture brand in Manhattan, with plans to further expand to the west coast.
All this from a shy graduate from SNDT, who set up her fashion label with her brother and sister in 1995!
Who says behind-the- scenes hard work doesn’t pay?
