Shaikh was arrested for stealing a cellphone from a neighbour's house and molesting a 22 year old woman on Wednesday night.

“My son could have robbed the cellphone, but he can never molest a woman,” Bismilla said.

“He was asleep while we were watching the news on the building collapse near our house at Nehru Nagar in Kurla. He woke up and got dressed,” said Bismilla.

“When I asked him where he was going, he said he was going to the building collapse site. When he returned after an hour, the complainants followed him home. They told me that he had robbed their mobile phone. I was embarrassed and asked them to take him to the police.”

Shaikh's lawyer Prakash Wagh also claimed that he did not molest the woman, but lost his balance and fell on her.

“I am, however, not going to represent him in this case,” said Wagh.
