Amritsar: 'Panghoora - the cradle', instituted by the Amritsar district administration for young mothers or couples to drop their "unwanted" children in 2008, received its 77th child, a girl aged around two months, on Wednesday, bringing the tally of female children brought to the facility to 72.

Dr Tarundeep Kaur, wife of Amritsar deputy commissioner Ravi Bhagat, received the child. "The baby was sent for medical examination, during which she was described as a 'healthy child'. She would be sent to one of the government-approved institutions for her upbringing, and would be put up for adoption after the completion of various legal formalities," said Dr Tarundeep Kaur.
