The incident took place on Monday night near the Border Observational Post (BOP) Amar in the Amritsar sector near Chabhal in Tarn Taran when the two were on duty. Both hailed from Rewari in Haryana.

According to BSF officials, constable Sunil Kumar, 28, was on patrol duty whereas constable Mahesh, 27, was guarding a 'morcha' near the fence.

At about 8.50pm, constable Sunil Kumar came to the morcha and opened fire at Mahesh. And in no time, Sunil shot himself with the same service rifle. BSF claimed that Sunil used the INSAS rifle and fired a total of eight bullets. Both died on the spot and the incident spread shock wave along the fence.

Although the BSF officials stressed that they were yet to verify the reasons of this incident but a note found from Sunil Kumar's body indicated that this was a 'pre-planned' incident.
