Unknown assailants on Saturday opened fire on the private car of a deputy superintendent of police, who was critically injured in the incident.
Sources said DSP (jails), Kapurthala Modern Jail, Vikramjit Panthe was travelling in his Toyota Innova with his wife when assailants fired on his vehicle near Kapurthala Chowk around 11 pm.
There was no security guard with Panthe despite the officer facing threats from gangsters, said sources.
A police team rushed Panthe to a local hospital for treatment. Police said three shots were fired at the car, of which one hit the DSP’s leg. Heavy security has been deployed outside the hospital. Doctors said the DSP was out of danger.
