A Moga police special team raided Nathuwal police post on Saturday and arrested incharge ASI Jarnail Singh and head munshi Jasbir Singh for involvement in smuggling of poppy husk. Their third accomplice head constable Devinder Singh managed to flee.
Moga SSP Kanwaljit Singh Dhillon led the team and has dismissed the three cops from service.
"The officials were negotiating a deal at the time of the raid," said the SSP.
He added that 168 kg of poppy husk, 66 bottles of liquor and Rs 46,000 had been recovered from the possession of the arrested policemen.
"The accused had been involved in trade of poppy husk and liquor for quite some time now," said the SSP.
He added that preliminary investigations suggested that the ASI and the head munshi were in touch with drug peddler, Binder Singh of Bhagta Bhai in Bathinda.
He claimed that the seized poppy husk was meant for one Gurbhej Singh of Natthuwala Garbi village; Kala Singh and Amrik Singh of Mahla Kalan, and Iqbal Singh of Mangewala village in Moga for smuggling.
"I have formed a special investigation team to nab head constable Devinder Singh. More arrests will be made soon."
He added that an inquiry will also be conducted into the properties, if any, owned by these officials.
"A case under the NDPS Act and the Excise Act has also been registered against the accused. The three policemen have been suspended under Punjab Police Rules 16.1 read with Article 311 (2) (B) of the Indian Constitution."
A local court has remanded the arrested duo to police custody till September 10.
