ganesh chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi is an important Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of elephant-headed Hindu God Ganesha and falls in the month of Bhadrapada. It falls either in August or September as per the Gregorian calendar. Celebrated with much fanfare and enthusiasm, the festival is celebrated over a span of 10 days and is popularly called Ganeshotsav. The festival is more popular in the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, and Karnataka compared to others. The 'sthapana' of Lord Ganesha is done at the beginning of the festival and the idols are kept for 1.5, 3, 5, 7 or 10 days during the festival. On the concluding day of the festival, which is also called Anant Chaturdashi, huge processions are carried out for Ganesh Visarjan where people bid adieu to Ganpati Bappa urging him to come back early next year.

If cleanliness is next to godliness, it’s time to clean up temples

For Hindus, religion is a highly individualised pursuit. A devotee is concerned about his moksha, the satisfaction of his wants, and less about anything else.

Siddhivinayak temple trustees may be right in their claim of a conspiracy. But generally, it is an unfortunate fact that many of our well-known temples are also surrounded by a great degree of filth. (HT Photo)
