Why are high heels banned at some ancient Greek monuments? The unusual rule explained
Greece restricts high heels at some ancient monuments, highlighting the unusual rules visitors may encounter at historic sites.
Greece introduced restrictions on high-heeled shoes at certain archaeological sites in 2009 over concerns that they could damage ancient stone and marble surfaces. The measures included the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens, an ancient theatre where pointed heels and chewing gum were among the concerns raised by heritage authorities.

Why are high heels restricted at ancient Greek monuments?
According to a report by Norwegian newspaper VG, Greek authorities launched measures to prevent visitors from wearing high heels at several historic monuments. The restrictions were intended to protect structures that had begun showing signs of wear from heavy visitor footfall and cultural events.
The Odeon of Herodes Atticus, located on the southern slope of the Acropolis in Athens, was among the sites mentioned in reports at the time. Built in AD 161 by Herodes Atticus in memory of his wife, the ancient theatre remains a prominent cultural venue.

According to the official Athens guide, the theatre has a strict no-heels policy to protect its marble surfaces. The venue's visitor information also warns that discarded food and chewing gum can cause lasting damage to the historic structure.
Pointed heels concentrate a person's weight on a relatively small area, placing pressure on the surface beneath them. At heritage sites, repeated contact with fragile stonework can contribute to wear, making preventive measures important for conservation.
Where does the restriction apply?
The restriction should not be interpreted as a ban on wearing high heels throughout Greece. It concerns access to specific archaeological sites and monuments, where footwear rules are intended to protect historic surfaces.
The official Athens guide to the Odeon of Herodes Atticus identifies the theatre as one of the city's important ancient landmarks. Visitors planning to attend performances there should check the venue's entry rules in advance, as high heels are not permitted inside the theatre.
