'Chavittunatakam', which literally means 'foot stomping dance drama', is a theater form that is a synthesis of Indian dance movements, western operatic style of presentation and Christian themes. This art genre that evolved during the time of the Portuguese in the Malabar Coast is almost extant and in need of revival. Each troop comprises of 35 to 40 senior and junior artisans, including women.
