There were no reports of damage or casualty so far, it said.

The first quake, with a magnitude of 5.5, occurred at 02.07 am in the eastern province of Irian. Three hours later, another quake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale, jolted the Maluku province, the agency said.

Indonesia sits on a vulnerable zone called "the Pacific Ring of Fire" where two continental plates meet causing frequent volcanic movements.
