Actor Shahid Kapoor has announced that he will play boxer Dingko Singh in a sports biopic directed by Airlift helmer, Raja Krishna Menon. Singh is an Asian gold medallist in the Bantamweight category. Shahid is awaiting the release of his film, Batti Gul Meter Chalu opposite Shraddha Kapoor, and will also star in the remake of Telugu hit Arjun Reddy.
According to a report in DNA, Shahid was quoted as saying, “The thing that I loved about this story is that he is one of those superstars who we don’t know much about. If a film like Dangal (2016) wasn’t made, we wouldn’t know as much about the Phogat sisters. Dingko is a cancer survivor, and he went through 13 rounds of chemotherapy. He has even gone on to say that his biggest win was surviving cancer and not the gold medal he won at the age of 19 at the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok.”
Ngangom Dingko Singh, popularly known as Dingko Singh, was awarded Padma Shri in 2013. The film based on the boxer is expected to go on the floors sometime in April 2019. Before this project, Shahid will also be working on the remake of Telugu blockbuster Arjun Reddy. The Hindi version is also helmed by director Sandeep Vanga who also directed the Telugu film, which starred Vijay Devarakonda and Shalini Pandey in lead roles.
