Tuesday marks the 62nd birth anniversary of Bollywood actor Smita Patil.

Tuesday marks the 62nd birth anniversary of Bollywood actor Smita Patil. The actor, who passed away at the young age of 31, has had a wide canvas of work that included films like Bhumika, Umbartha, Bhavni Bhavai and Aakrosh, apart from mainstream films such as Namak Halaal and Kasam Paida Karnewale Ki.

Born on October 17, 1955 in Pune (Maharashtra), Smita completed her graduation from the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune and worked as a Doordashan news anchor in the 70s. She graduated from a TV announcer to become an acclaimed actress soon. The youngest star to be honoured with a Padmashri, her career spanned only a decade but had a long list of acclaimed films crammed into it.

Amitabh Bachchan, who worked with her in Namak Halaal, had said, “When it comes to do doing cinema (films) with me, she did things that were against her nature like in Namak Halal she had to do rain dance with me. She felt it was away from her culture and thinking. She told me she had worked in so many good films but once when she was at the airport she felt bit awkward and embarrassed that people remembered her for Namak Halal.”

“She was not a Method actor. She followed her instinct and acted from the gut, putting herself entirely in the director’s hands. Her greatest asset was her intensity. Intensity became her. Intensity defined her,” author Mithali Rao wrote in her biography on the actor, Smita Patil: A Brief Incandescence.

Here’s a look at some of her beautiful pictures over the years:
