The CAG audit was ordered by the government in November 2007 but began only this month, after a long deadlock. Private companies like RIL and British Gas — which is also set to be audited by the CAG — had said the government had given up its auditing rights under production sharing contracts.

“We ran into problems in terms of access in June 2008,” a CAG official associated with the audit, who did not wish to be named, told the Hindustan Times. “Only recently did we manage to sort out the issues.”

When contacted by HT, officials of RIL refused to comment.
