An official spokesperson said while the government had received numerous suggestions for the status of state flower, Butea Monosperma (palash) and Phanera Variegata (Kachnar), were the top contenders. The spokesperson said the suggestions received also included other flower species such as kikar, gurhal, jawakusum and rohra.

The spokesperson said some of these species were on the verge of extinction, and if any of these was named the state flower, concrete strategies would be formulated for their preservation.
