Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research former director Dr Iqbal Chand Pathak passed away on Tuesday.

A condolence meeting was organised at PGIMER to honour Pathak, who held the position of director from 1981 until his retirement in 1985.
Pathak had joined PGIMER as assistant professor in surgery in 1962 and subsequently, established an independent paediatric surgery department in June 1968 — one of the earliest in northwest India.
Born in Punjab, Pathak graduated from medical college in Amritsar and received higher training in paediatric surgery from the Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, London. He was also the Professor Emeritus and founder chairperson of PGI’s department of paediatric surgery.
Pathak was the honorary surgeon to the President of India from 1983-85. He was recipient of many awards including the RK Gandhi Gold Medal award in 2006.
