Panel marks 75 yrs of UT with discussion on women’s role in shaping city
The session brought together women from academia, defence, arts, sports, literature and medicine to reflect on how the city’s social and institutional landscape shaped their journeys
Chandigarh The Chandigarh Citizens Foundation organised a panel discussion titled “Women, Memory, and the Making of a City” at the Centre for Research in Rural and Industrial Development (CRRID) on Friday to mark International Women’s Day and celebrate 75 years of UT.
The session brought together women from academia, defence, arts, sports, literature and medicine to reflect on how the city’s social and institutional landscape shaped their journeys. Speakers included Panjab University’s (PU) vice chancellor Renu Vig, Pam Rajput, Neelam Mansingh Chowdhry, Ravinder Jit Randhawa, Bhavneet Bharti, para table tennis player Vidya Kumari, and poet Sukhwinder Amrit.
Vig said PU’s academic environment nurtured inquiry and public responsibility, while Rajput credited the city’s progressive culture for encouraging work on gender justice. Chowdhry described Chandigarh as a fertile cultural space, and Randhawa said its disciplined yet inclusive ethos shaped her values of resilience and service.
Bharti highlighted the influence of Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research on her medical career, while Kumari spoke online about the city’s supportive sporting environment. Amrit reflected on UT’s literary milieu shaping her poetry.Over 100 students from city colleges attended the programme, which concluded with an interactive session coordinated by the foundation’s education focus group.
