THE World University rankings: PU loses footing, slips to 801-1,000 bracket
PU had been positioned in the 601-800 bracket in the last edition of the global rankings, the varsity’s score in teaching has dropped to 30.5 against last year’s 32.9.
Ranked in the 601-800 bracket globally last year, Panjab University has slipped to the 801-1000 bracket in the 2023 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings released on Wednesday.
IISC Bengaluru is the only Indian institute in the Top 300. Country’s highest-ranked institution, it also moved up from last year’s 301-350 grouping to 251-300 bracket this year.
JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research and Himachal Pradesh-based Shoolini University shared the second spot in the country, with a place in the 351-400 bracket.
IIT Ropar has been placed in the 501-600 bracket, down from last year’s 351-400 bracket. No Indian institution has featured among the Top 250 varsities so far.
University of Oxford, United Kingdom; Harvard University, Unites States; and University of Cambridge, United Kingdom, bagged the Top 3 ranks globally.
Outperformed by many
PU was outstripped by Shoolini University in Himachal Pradesh (351-400), Alagappa University (401-500), Jamia Millia Islamia (501-600), Banaras Hindu University (601-800), Jawaharlal Nehru University (601-800) and Aligarh Muslim University (801-1,000).
However, the varsity outperformed University of Calcutta, University of Delhi, IISER, Pune; IISER, Kolkata, and Indian Institute of Technology,Bhubaneswar.
Among other institutes from the region, Maharishi Markandeshwar University (MMU), Haryana, and Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Patiala, have ranked in the 601-800 bracket.
Overall score drops further
PU’s overall score is in the 29.8 to 33.9 bracket, down from last year’s 32.0 to 37.9 and 2021’s 30.2 to 36.3.
The varsity has made a significant jump in citations with a score of 60 this year compared to 52.6 in the last edition of the ranking.
It has also scored better in industry income, improving from 35.4 to 35.5 and in international outlook, where its score has increased from 16.5 to 17.1.
However, the varsity’s score in teaching has dropped to 30.5 against last year’s 32.9. It has scored 14.6 in research, which is also lower than last year’s 14.8.
In 2013, PU was on the top spot in the country, leaving behind all technical and non-technical institutes. In 2014, the university was placed in the 226-250 bracket, but slipped to 276-300 in 2015. It further dropped to 501-600 bracket in 2016 and was ranked in the 601-800 bracket from 2017 till 2022.
University officials did not comment on the matter.
