Mumbai rain highlights: IMD issues yellow alert, predicts heavy rainfall for 2 days

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) continued its search and rescue operations at the landslide-hit Irshalgad in Raigad on Saturday. Till now, 22 dead bodies have been recovered from the site, officials said.

One team of NDRF reached the site early this morning and more are of its teams are expected to join the search operation later today.

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray will visit the landslide-affected people lodged in a nearby temple around 10.30 am today.

Since the rains finally hit the city on June 25, after a delayed start, the city has already received 62% of its total monsoon quota. While the annual quota is 2,318.8 mm, the city’s base weather station in Santacruz has already recorded 1,458mm of rain since June 1. The search and rescue operation at Irshalwadi hamlet in Maharashtra's Raigad district, where a massive landslide claimed the lives of at least 22 people, resumed for the third day on Saturday as 86 villagers are yet to be traced, officials said. The landslide at the tribal village, situated on a hill slope under Khalapur tehsil that is located around 80 km from Mumbai, occurred on Wednesday night. The death toll till Thursday evening was 16, which went up to 22 on Friday as six more bodies were recovered.

The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), an urban planning agency of the Maharashtra government, has sent its fire brigade personnel and 600 labourers for rescue work at the landslide-hit Irshalwadi village, it said on Friday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Palghar district and an orange alert has been issued for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Ratnagiri districts for Saturday.

On Friday also the Mumbai and its suburbs witnessed a heavy spell of rains, which caused waterlogging in some low-lying areas at Andheri, Kurla, Ghatkopar, Chembur and some other places.

The downpour disrupted traffic movement with massive snarls in the city and suburbs as well.

"According to local information, a total of 48 families live in the tribal wadi and the population is 228. About 17 to 18 houses have collapsed. 98 persons have been rescued safely in the rescue operation. Tracing of the remaining 109 persons out of 228 is underway", the statement read.

The chief minister also said that Irsalwadi was not included in the list of potential fissure-prone places as per the Geological Survey of India (GSI) report.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde visited the site of the tragedy and took stock of the relief and rescue efforts. He also announced an ex-gratia of ₹5 lakh to the families of the deceased, said officials.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also spoke to Maharashtra Chief Minister Shinde after the incident. Shah said four National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been deployed to execute the rescue operation.

Two persons have died in rain-related incidents in Palghar in Maharashtra in the last 24 hours, a civic official said on Friday.

District Disaster Management Cell chief Vivekanand Kadam said 50-year-old Shantaram Vayda died after falling into a drain on Friday evening in Vasai town.

He had stepped out to buy vegetables and his body was retrieved by the fire brigade later, Kadam said.

The official said Brian Carvalho (44) of Girij in Sotawadi fell into a drain at 11am on Thursday and he was rescued some time later and rushed to a nearby hospital.

Heavy rains lashed Mumbai on Friday, leading to waterlogging in several low-lying areas and disrupting vehicular traffic in the city and suburbs. Most parts of the city and suburbs witnessed heavy spells of rain. The India Meteorological Department's (IMD) observatories at Colaba in south Mumbai and Santacruz in the western suburbs recorded rainfall of 92.2 mm and 115.2 mm, respectively, between 8.30 am to 5.30 pm. Waterlogging was reported in Andheri, Kurla, Ghatkopar, Chembur and some other places. The civic-run Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) diverted buses on more than 12 routes in Sion area in the afternoon, an official said.

Water logging due to heavy rains in Maharashtra on Friday disrupted train services in Mumbai and adjoining areas.

Waterlogging at Kurla station of the Harbour Line Down from Wadala to the Mankhurd section, suburban traffic was closed as a safety precautionary measure for a brief period. Rest assured, all sections were running. UP Harbour Line trains were running, the Central Railway Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) said on Friday.

A 50-year-old man drowned in a flooded nullah on Friday evening in Vasai town of Maharashtra's Palghar district, while a house wall collapsed amid heavy rains in a separate incident here, officials said. 

District Disaster Management Cell chief Vivekanand Kadam told PTI that the victim, Shantaram Vayda, set out of his house to get some eatables. While walking on the road in heavy showers, he accidentally fell into the swollen nullah and got washed away, he said, adding local firemen later fished out his body.

Incessant rain continued to lash Irshalwadi for the second consecutive day, even as the hamlet was enveloped in fog with the first hint of stench beginning to exude from the bodies still buried under debris and slush. Read more

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of "heavy to extremely heavy" rains in isolated places in the ghat (hilly) areas of Pune district, Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra on Saturday. 

"As the monsoon is becoming active and vigorous over Maharashtra, `red alert' is issued for areas of Konkan, ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra and a few districts of Vidarbha," said an IMD official

Survivors of the landslide at Irshalwadi village in Maharashtra's Raigad district will be provided temporary shelter in 60 shipping containers requisitioned by the district administration, said an official at the Konkan divisional headquarters on Friday. As per the Raigad district disaster management office, of the 229 residents of the village, located on a hill slope around 80km from Mumbai, 22 died in the July 19 landslide, while ten others were injured.

Irshalwadi may not have been on the government’s list of landslide–prone areas, however, the villagers say they had an inkling that a natural disaster was round the corner. Read more

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Friday said that the government will permanently resettle citizens from crack-prone areas to safer places.

In a statement in the Legislative Assembly, CM Shinde informed that a decision has been taken to permanently resettle the citizens of the crack-prone areas of the state to safer places.

According to the statement, during a discussion on the Irshalwadi village accident in the Raigad district in today's cabinet meeting, CMShinde said that "the citizens of the crack-prone areas where there is danger have been instructed to move to safe places immediately".

As many as 23 villages in Pune district have been identified as vulnerable (dangerous) by the district administration, officials said on Thursday. Read more
