Pune: The cyber police have lodged a case against an unidentified person for trying to extort Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former corporator Ganesh Bidkar of ₹25 lakh.

Bidkar, 50, a resident of Somwar Peth, filed a complaint in this regard on March 30.
As per the complainant, on March 30, at 9:30 pm when he was at a Ram Jayanti procession, he received a WhatsApp call from an unknown number. The caller abused him and demanded ₹25 lakh and threatened him with dire consequences if he fails to give the money.
According to the police, the caller intended to defame Bidkar. Senior inspector Meenal Patil said, “We are trying to find details of the accused and a case has been registered at cyber police station for threatening Bidkar.”
“A detailed probe is on,” said DCP (EOW and cyber crime) Sriniwas Ghadge.
On March 27, two persons have been arrested for allegedly demanding a ransom of ₹3crore from a city-based real estate developer by making a spoof call, impersonating BJP general secretary and former mayor of the city Murlidhar Mohol.
The incident happened on March 25.
