Sri Lanka squad for Asia Cup 2025 will see Wanindu Hasaranga making his return. The leg-spinning allrounder had suffered a hamstring injury during the Bangladesh series and missed the T20Is against Zimbabwe, but the selectors are hopeful he will be fit in time for the tournament in the UAE.
Hasaranga comes in for Dushan Hemantha, while uncapped batter Vishen Halambage has been left out, marking the only other change from the squad that faced Zimbabwe.
Compared to the side that lost to Bangladesh at home, the Asia Cup squad sees four changes. Avishka Fernando, Dinesh Chandimal, Jeffrey Vandersay and Eshan Malinga have been dropped. In their place, Nuwanidu Fernando, Kamil Mishara and fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera have been included, alongside the returning Hasaranga.
Allrounder Chamika Karunaratne also makes a comeback, strengthening the seam department alongside Dasun Shanaka. Notably, Angelo Mathews has not been picked, a sign that the selectors may not be considering him for the T20 World Cup next year, despite his availability for limited-overs cricket after retiring from Tests earlier in the year.
Sri Lanka’s spin attack will be led by Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana and Dunith Wellalage, giving the side a solid variety of bowling options.
The team begins their Asia Cup campaign on September 13 against Bangladesh. Sri Lanka will be hoping to build on their recent history in the tournament, having reached the final in 2023 and lifting the trophy in 2022.
