Royal Challengers Bengaluru beat Mumbai Indians by 18 runs

Commentary

6:54 PM IST Next up in the IPL - A new week in the Indian Premier League kicks off on Monday, 13th April, when the Sunrisers Hyderabad take on the Rajasthan Royals in Hyderabad, with the Royals being one of only 2 sides to remain unbeaten so far. The game will commence at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT), but as you know the drill, you can join us early for the build-up. Until then, take care and goodbye!
6:53 PM IST Weekend action comes to a close - A run-fest in Mumbai to wrap up the weekend. 462 runs were scored in a marathon, with RCB coming up trumps to clinch their third win of the season in 4 games, while MI have plenty to think about, particularly on the bowling front, having now lost 3 on the trot. Earlier in the day in Lucknow, the Gujarat Titans prevailed over the Lucknow Super Giants in a comfortable chase, with both sides now having 2 wins and as many losses.
6:44 PM IST The skipper of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru - Rajat Patidar says that the win feels amazing, especially with the atmosphere in Wankhede, and the feeling of playing in a packed stadium like this is special. Adds that the way Virat Kohli and Phil Salt set it up was crucial, and then he and the rest of the batters managed to capitalise. On being called a spin specialist in the past, Patidar says that he does play spin well, but he is also good against pace, and it is starting to show. On Kohli's injury, he downplays it a bit and says that he doesn't know yet.
6:44 PM IST PLAYER OF THE MATCH - For his swashbuckling 78 off 36 balls, Phil Salt wins the award. When asked about his golden duck in the last game and then coming up with this performance tonight, Salt says it is about riding the highs and lows of the game and staying balanced. Salt says that some grounds are not the most bowler-friendly, so the approach is to keep taking the attack to the opposition. Mentions that you cannot score runs in every game, and no one can, so his focus is on trying to make an impact whenever he gets the opportunity.
6:39 PM IST Time for the presentation ceremony....
6:33 PM IST Next up is RCB's Suyash Sharma - Suyash says the plan was to keep the stumps in play. Mentions that he was not focused on bowling dot balls, but wanted to pick up wickets. He adds that it depends on the situation, whether to bowl defensively to save runs or attack in search of wickets. When asked about his plans against Tilak Varma and Ryan Rickelton, he says he wanted to bowl in the blockhole, as they are strong when given width, and his aim was simply to hit the stumps.
6:58 PM IST The captain of the Mumbai Indians - Hardik Pandya says that they just conceded way too many runs. Adds that they were always playing catch-up, and be it as a bowling unit or the batting unit, they have been playing catch-up in the last two games. Believes that it is a good thing that they have a couple of days off to reconsider a few things. He acknowledges that things aren't working for them, and irrespective of the toss or the wicket, they need to play good cricket. On the Powerplays yielding so many runs in general, he says that they will look into it and do what they can with the ball. On Sherfane Rutherford, Pandya says that they always knew the kind of potential he has and the way he batted, he gave us a lot of confidence tonight.
6:50 PM IST Salt and Patidar headline RCB blitz - After the toss fell MI's way, they were sent on a leather hunt as first Phil Salt, and then Rajat Patidar teed off. Amidst that carnage, Virat Kohli had an uncharacteristically scratchy innings. 183 at the end of 14 overs, and the way RCB were going, it looked like a case of how much beyond 250 and not if they would get there. However, MI managed to pull things back, and RCB had to be content with 240. Jasprit Bumrah was once again tough to get away and was the most economical of the lot, though he went wicketless and is yet to pick up a wicket this IPL.
6:37 PM IST A mountain too steep to climb - In pursuit of 241, it was not a bad start for the Mumbai Indians with 56 runs coming off the first 5 overs, but then Rohit Sharma pulled up with a hamstring issue. That resulted in a couple of breaks before eventually retiring hurt. If that was not enough to disrupt the momentum, Ryan Rickelton and Tilak Varma fell in the same over. From there, MI never managed to inject the desired impetus into their innings and did not get those big overs to keep the required run rate in check. Krunal Pandya made it all the more difficult for Mumbai through the middle phase, but Sherfane Rutherford's power-hitting ensured the run rate did not take a bigger hit.
6:29 PM IST RCB return to winning ways - A game that seemed to go on forever, but the result was sealed well before the end. A win set up by the RCB batters, and the bowlers did the rest to close it out. Hardik Pandya pointed to execution with the ball as the reason for their defeat in that 11-over shootout against the Rajasthan Royals, and it was the bowling once again that came under fire. After starting the season with a win, MI have now lost three games in a row.

Romario Shepherd to Sherfane Rutherford, 6 runs

ballImg129.2kph

SIX! That's it, it is finally over, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru win by 18 runs. Overpitched delivery outside off, right in the slot, Sherfane Rutherford hangs back and muscles it through the line over long on for another biggie, the fourth one in the over. 26 runs off it.

Romario Shepherd to Sherfane Rutherford, 6 runs

SIX! Rutherford is playing a gem here, sadly, it doesn't seem to be enough. A low full toss, wide outside the off stump, Rutherford reaches out and stylishly lofts it all the way over the cover fence for a biggie.

A swing and a miss. Back of a length and outside off, Rutherford leans back to pull but misses. He wants to review it for a wide, not quite sure why but MI don't have any reviews left.

Romario Shepherd to Sherfane Rutherford, 6 runs

ballImg132.1kph

SIX! FIFTY up for Sherfane Rutherford, his maiden IPL half-century. A waist-high full toss from Shepherd, angling into the batter. Rutherford swivels and pulls it flat over deep backward square leg for a six. Rutherford feels this is above waist height and takes the review for a No Ball not given. The third umpire confirms that Rutherford's waist height is 1 meter, and the ball was at 0.97 meters, close but not close enough.

6:18 PM IST Rasikh Salam returns, or does he? He was at the top of his mark, ready to bowl, but it turns out he had been off the field for too long and is not eligible to bowl yet. Romario Shepherd to bowl the final over of the game.

SIX! An over filled with three wides and three big hits, nothing in between. Short of a length, and outside off, Sherfane Rutherford leans back and swings with the angle, nailing it over deep mid-wicket for a biggie. 21 off the over and still, it's under-par.

Jacob Duffy to Sherfane Rutherford, no run

ballImg112.7kph

Another review, this time by Sherfane Rutherford for a wide not given for height. Short ball around off, comes in at helmet height and Rutherford fails to pull it away. The third umpire is called into action once again and technology confirms that Rutherford's head height is 1.87 meters, whereas the ball passed at a height of 1.80 meters. No wide!

WIDE! Pace off again from Duffy, short and wide outside off. Rutherford looks to slap it over point but misses and a wide is called. Once again, RCB review it. The third umpire checks it again and this time, he finds that no part of the ball is inside the wide guideline. The wide call stays.

Jacob Duffy to Sherfane Rutherford, no run

ballImg116.3kph

Good review. This time on the off side. Slower one, slightly short, it is the off cutter that goes away from the left-hander and is called a wide. Rutherford hops up to hit it over the off side but misses. Duffy feels this is a harsh call and after pondering for a while, Rajat Patidar reviews the wide call. The third umpire checks the replays and finds that the ball is passing inside the wide guideline and the on-field decision is changed.

Romario Shepherd to Sherfane Rutherford, 1 run

Shepherd picks up two wickets in two balls, but wait, neither of them will count. Pitched up full again, at the stumps, Sherfane Rutherford goes hard at it and skews it towards extra cover. Rajat Patidar takes the catch but it is a Free Hit and the batters pick up a single.

NB
15.6

Romario Shepherd to Sherfane Rutherford, 1 run

ballImg132.2kph

Can you believe it? You simply cannot fathom it. Romario Shepherd comes on to finish off Rasikh's over, just one ball to bowl and gets the dangerman Sherfane Rutherford, but hang on, ROMARIO HAS OVERSTEPPED. It is a No Ball as the siren goes off and Rutherford will have a go at the Free Hit. Coming to the delivery, this is bowled full on leg stump, Rutherford looks to flick it off the pads, but ends up skying it high towards mid-wicket. A plethora of fielders run towards it but it is the bowler who calls for it and reaches towards the ball, dives in and pouches it brilliantly. However, it all goes in vain.

5:57 PM IST Oh, dear! Rasikh Salam is down again. Rajat Patidar is quick to help the pacer with a few stretches. Another appearance for the physio, who is now unwrapping Salam's left calf that was strapped earlier. The decision has been made. Rasikh is going off the field. Romario Shepherd will complete the over.

Rasikh Salam to Sherfane Rutherford, no run

ballImg132.7kph

Oh, that's well bowled and once again Rasikh is down on the ground. Gets the yorker in, just outside the line of the off stump. Rutherford looks to play the cover drive but the ball sneaks past the under edge. This could be another stoppage in the game.

Rasikh Salam to Naman Dhir, no run

ballImg135.9kph

OUT! CAUGHT! Rasikh Salam might be struggling with his fitness, but he's got a wicket here. Rasikh peppers that hard length and bowls it just outside off. Naman Dhir stays back and looks to power it through the off side but gets it high on the bat. The ball gets lobbed towards extra cover, where Rajat Patidar takes a simple catch, and Rasikh is pumped up with that wicket. 87 needed now off 27 balls.

1
15.2

Rasikh Salam to Sherfane Rutherford, 1 run

Goes for the yorker, ends up bowling a very low full toss on off, Rutherford punches it down to long off for a single.

5:57 PM IST Rasikh Salam is really struggling. He pulled up on his follow-through and is down on the ground. It's the cramps in the left calf that are bothering him. The physio is out again to tend to Rasikh. Salam is back on his feet, and he will have another go.
6
15.1

Rasikh Salam to Sherfane Rutherford, 6 runs

SIX! It's go big or go home time and Sherfane Rutherford has just deposited that deep into the stands. Slower one into the pitch, sits up nicely for the batter. Rutherford picks it up and whacks it handsomely in front of deep square leg for a biggie. And the cramp is also back for Rasikh, not a good sign for RCB.

5:44 PM IST Suyash Sharma is done with his spell, and Rasikh Salam (2-0-15-0) comes back in to replace him. However, Rasikh seems to have pulled up while starting the over. There seems to be an issue with his left shin, or maybe his calf has an issue. The physio is out and hands him the 'pickle juice.' On this note, the umpires call for a STRATEGIC BREAK. RCB have complete control of the game right now and MI need in excess of 18 runs an over to get over the line. It will be a like a miracle if they do pull it off from here, but stranger things have happened in a game of cricket, especially in the IPL.

OUT! IN THE AIR AND GONE! First wicket of the night for Duffy and a big one at that. Duffy slips in the full ball and the line stays outside off. Hardik makes the shuffle again and swings hard at it. He loses his shape and ends up slicing it in the air off the outer half towards deep backward point. 5:13 PM IST STRATEGIC BREAK! Not only have RCB picked up a couple of wickets in the middle phase, but they have also pushed the required rate to just over 14. It all started promisingly for MI, but they have lost a bit of momentum, first with Rohit Sharma's hamstring issue forcing him off the field, and then a couple of wickets added to their woes. They will be mindful of not letting the run rate get out of sight. Suyash Sharma to continue after the break.
