Sydney Sixers beat Brisbane Heat by 3 wickets

Commentary

11:46 AM IST That got really close, but in the end, the Sixers kept their cool and got the job done. That's what marks the difference between good teams and great teams. With this win, the Sixers leapfrog the Heat to take the fourth spot. Up next, the BBL caravan rolls into the City of Churches, Adelaide, for Match 25 of the season as Adelaide Strikers host the bottom-placed Sydney Thunder at the Adelaide Oval. That game will be played on Tuesday, 6th January with the first ball scheduled to be bowled at 1.45 pm IST (8.15 am GMT). But do make sure to mark your presence an hour earlier for all the buildup. That's all from the BBL action for today. Stay safe. Take care, cheers!
11:44 AM IST Joel Davies is undoubtedly adjudged the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his all-round performance. He says he hasn’t played in a game quite like this before and admits it was scrappy, but he is happy they managed to get over the line. He feels the side was fortunate to bowl first and then benefit from the dew in the second innings, which allowed the ball to come on a bit better. Davies credits the fast bowlers for setting the game up and making his job easier with the ball. He adds that while batting with Moises Henriques first and then with Hayden Kerr, the talk was to just keep batting.
11:44 AM IST ... THE PRESENTATION ...
11:46 AM IST Earlier in the game, the Sixers asked the Heat to bat first. For a brief window, Wildermuth made it look competitive, striking a lively 31 before departing in the Powerplay. Once he fell, Brisbane slipped into a spiral. The surface demanded patience and precision, neither of which the middle order could summon, as wickets tumbled in quick succession. The Sixers were spot on in their assessment of conditions, taking the pace off, stretching the batters with subtle changes in length and angle, and completely choking the runs. Weibgen fought his way to 24 before a costly run-out, and at 91/9 in the 17th over, the Heat were on the brink of a complete collapse. Ollie Patterson and Thomas Balkin, however, showed composure beyond their years, seeing out the remaining overs to lift the total to 114. Abbott, Dwarshuis, and Joel Davies led the way with two wickets each, while Edwards and Kerr chipped in with one apiece.
11:51 AM IST The Sixers kept losing wickets off some uninspiring shots and suddenly found themselves reeling at 56/7, with Silk, Edwards and Henriques all back in the hut for little return. Still, in a chase, the awareness of the target offers a degree of control, a chance to reset even from deep trouble. Joel Davies and Hayden Kerr provided exactly that, batting with clarity and calm to piece together a stubborn and unbeaten 62-run stand that dragged the game back in their favour, when the walls were closing in tighter on the Sixers. What really works in the Sixers’ favour is the depth of the XI they have assembled. When a side has Hayden Kerr batting at nine, with Abbott and Dwarshuis still to come, it underlines how deep the batting runs. Every player down the order has the ability to strike cleanly, and in a chase of such modest proportions, it only takes one of them to produce a brief burst to nip the game in the bud.
11:44 AM IST With very little prior reference on how the surface at Coffs Harbour would behave, batting was always going to be a challenge. That was evident in the first innings on a sluggish pitch, and the same held true in the chase despite the dew coming in. A target of 115 in a T20 might usually look routine, but judgment only truly settles in once both sides have batted on the same surface. The Sixers felt that pressure early, losing Babar, Philippe, and Hughes to slump to 32/3, with Ollie Patterson picking up two early wickets.
11:49 AM IST This was the game where the ball dominated the bat in every sense. But also, it was one where the young budding stars made headlines. In the first innings, when the Brisbane Heat were staring at a scare of being bowled out below 100, the youngsters, Ollie Patterson and Thomas Balkin, bailed them out of trouble and helped their side to post something to fight for, with a crucial 23-run last wicket partnership. Ollie Patterson then responded to the call with the ball as well, picking up two wickets. For the Sixers, the night belonged well and truly to Joel Davies. He made his impact in both disciplines, chipping in with a couple of crucial wickets before producing a composed and mature 35 off 26 balls, batting beyond his years to see his side home.
11:39 AM IST What a humdinger of a game we have witnessed at the Coffs Harbour! High-scoring games in T20 may grab the headlines, but there’s something uniquely gripping about low-scoring thrillers like this. Two crucial points for the Sydney Sixers and one can sense the sigh of relief on Moises Henriques' face as the men in magenta keep themselves well and truly alive in the season. Got to feel for the Brisbane Heat though. They couldn't produce much with the bat, but despite having less than run-a-ball to defend, they made every run a real struggle for the Sixers.

SIX! BANG! That will do nicely for the Sydney Sixers. Hayden Kerr and Joel Davies exchange hugs and they should be very proud of themselves for the way they held their composure in a tense chase. Patterson switches to around the wicket and bashes the surface, around off. This sits up to be hit and Kerr nails the pull over deep mid-wicket for a six. The Sixers win by 3 wickets with 8 balls to spare.

Low full toss, tailing in at the toes, Davies flicks it towards short fine leg and gets to the other end.

18.2

Ollie Patterson to Joel Davies, 4 runs

FOUR! Width offered with no protection in the deep on the off side and Davies cashes in! Full ball from Patterson, near the tramline on off. Joel extends his hands into the drive and plays it all along the ground, wide of extra cover for a four. 4 more needed for Sydney.

Ollie Patterson to Joel Davies, 1 run

ballImg132.8kph

Wide! Very full but down leg, Davies misses out on the tickle. Wide given and now the Sixers need 9. The 50-run partnership comes up between Kerr and Davies!

2
18.1

Ollie Patterson to Joel Davies, 2 runs

ballImg132.7kph

Good running! Full and angled in at the sticks, Davies brings his wrists into play and plays it to the left of deep mid-wicket. The batters take the first one hard and that allows them to come back for the second run. Max Bryant sprints to his left in the deep and gets rid of the ball quickly, but cannot prevent the batters from completing the second.

11:40 AM IST Righto, with 2 overs left, the Power Surge has been activated mandatorily. Only 2 fielders are allowed outside the inner ring. There is a deep backward square leg in place, along with a deep mid-wicket. The line has to be in the bodyline. Ollie Patterson (3-0-17-2) to bowl the first Surge over as the Sixers need 12 off 12.

Nearly sneaked through! The ball seams back in off the surface, on a good length, on off and middle. Kerr brings his bat out in front to push it down the ground. Gets an inside edge onto the back thigh and as the ball rolls in front of backward point, the batters set off for a quick single. Hugh Weibgen gets to the ball quickly and releases an underarm throw at the batting end, but misses. Davies was home anyway.

Xavier Bartlett to Hayden Kerr, 4 runs

ballImg129.6kph

FOUR! Good effort in the deep, but not enough. Bartlett starts with a full ball, outside off, Hayden Kerr gets the width to work it, and he cracks the drive to the left of the man in the deep. Thomas Balkin sprints and dives to his left and manages to make the stop, but the ball deflects off his left hand first onto his right hand, and then it trickles into the fence. 14 more needed from 17. 100 UP FOR SYDNEY SIXERS!

11:24 AM IST Xavier Bartlett (3-0-17-1) is back into the attack, replacing Ollie Patterson. And just FYI, the Sixers are yet to take the Power Surge. They haven't taken it yet, which means that the field restrictions will apply in the last two overs.

10:52 AM IST DRINKS BREAK! The scales have tilted in favor of Brisbane Heat now. With all the experienced batters of the Sixers gone, they are staring down the barrel. But to be very fair, most of the wickets were self-inflicted, looking at the shot selection from Jack Edwards or Jordan Silk.
