Age 58PakistanPAKISTAN
Left Handed Batsman

A lightning strike in human form, a maestro of wristy wizardry, and an absolute nightmare for opening bowlers, Saeed Anwar brought electrifying dynamism to Pakistan's batting lineup. Born in Karachi, Sindh, the dashing left-handed opener combined imperious off-side driving with breathtaking flicks off his pads, slicing through inner field rings with surgical timing and effortless flair. Anwar possessed an explosive gear shift that redefined opening batting in limited-overs cricket, turning the mandatory early fielding restrictions into relentless scoring exhibitions.

Anwar launched his international career during an ODI against the West Indies at Perth in January 1989, before earning his Test cap against the same opposition at Faisalabad in November 1990. Over a glittering international career spanning 55 Test matches and 247 ODIs, he amassed 4,052 Test runs at an average of 45.52, featuring 11 centuries, alongside a staggering 8,824 ODI runs at an average of 39.21 with 20 centuries. He ignited global headlines at Sharjah in late 1993 by smashing three consecutive ODI centuries against Sri Lanka, the West Indies, and Sri Lanka again, etching his name among the most dominant white-ball openers in history.

His absolute masterpiece unfolded during the Independence Cup at Chennai in May 1997, when he launched a breathtaking assault against India to score 194 off 146 balls. That performance stood as the highest individual score in ODI history for over a decade, setting a benchmark that redefined limited-overs batting. In red-ball cricket, he delivered another iconic exhibition against India at Kolkata in February 1999, scoring an unbeaten 188 to carry his bat through a gruelling Test innings. Across domestic circuits, he displayed his artistry for setups like Agriculture Development Bank of Pakistan, United Bank Limited, and Karachi.

Representing Pakistan across three ICC Cricket World Cups in 1996, 1999, and 2003, Anwar consistently delivered his finest efforts on the grandest stages, finishing as his nation's top run-scorer in all three tournaments. Honoured as a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1997 and a recipient of the prestigious Pride of Performance award, he remains an immortal figure in world cricket, forever celebrated as one of the most stylish and lethal openers to ever grace the game.
