Born in Kolkata on July 8, 1972, Sourav Chandidas Ganguly made his initial international debut in 1992 before earning a landmark Test recall four years later. Dubbed "The Prince of Kolkata" by Geoffrey Boycott, he announced his arrival with a majestic 131 at Lord’s: setting a historic benchmark for Test debuts at the iconic ground. Across 113 Tests, Ganguly stacked up 7,212 runs at an average of 42.17, including 16 centuries and 35 fifties, headlined by a career-best 239 against Pakistan. Notably, India never lost a single Test match in which Dada scored a century.
A left-handed maestro on the off-side, Rahul Dravid famously remarked that there was God on the off-side, and then there was Sourav Ganguly. In One-Day Internationals, he scored 11,363 runs in 311 matches at an average of 41.02, alongside 22 centuries and 72 fifties. Partnering with Sachin Tendulkar, he forged a legendary opening pair, accumulating 6,609 runs together with 21 century stands. He also smashed a breathtaking 183 against Sri Lanka at Taunton during the 1999 World Cup, cementing one of the most iconic World Cup innings by an Indian batter.
Taking over as national captain in 2000 during a severe crisis, Ganguly transformed Indian cricket with a bold, aggressive ethos. He backed a golden core of young talents - Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, and MS Dhoni, until they evolved into world-class match-winners. Under his leadership across 49 Tests (21 wins) and 147 ODIs (76 wins), India broke Australia’s 16-match Test streak in 2001, won the 2002 NatWest Trophy, reached the 2003 World Cup final, and won a historic tour in Pakistan in 2004. His iconic shirt-waving celebration on the Lord’s balcony in 2002 remains the ultimate symbol of modern Indian cricket's fearlessness.
Ganguly was also an effective medium-pacer, capturing 100 ODI and 32 Test wickets to break crucial partnerships. After a high-profile fallout with coach Greg Chappell in 2005 cost him his captaincy and spot, he mounted a roaring comeback to finish as India's top Test run-scorer in 2007 before retiring from international cricket on his own terms in 2008. Following his playing career, he skippered IPL franchises, served as Cricket Association of Bengal President, and held office as the 35th President of the BCCI from 2019 to 2022. Beyond his 18,500-plus international runs and 132 wickets, Dada's enduring legacy is that he gave Indian cricket its spine and taught the team how to win globally. This absolute legend of the game was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame in July 2026 to celebrate a career full of guts and glory.
